Hi,

My Wilderness knife from Bob Dozier arrived today. I thought I'd post a couple of pics comparing the Wilderness and ProGuide models:

I always like to see Dozier knives with stag on them. Mike your knives look really nice, good buy.

ZOWIE! Very nice indeed!!

How would you compare the two head-to-head? How would you decide which one to take into the woods, and which should stay home? I am looking at both of these models, and can't afford both, so I am trying to figure out which it should be. Any input is appreciated.

Mike, excellent knives! Bob does seem to keep coming up with good stag, I think he has a good supply from when it was plentiful.
My scanner pic stinks but here's a shot of my Dozier Personal.

I'm not sure I'll be able to decide... but that's a nice kind of problem to be faced with. :)

The Wilderness definitely feels heavier and bigger. I hadn't expected there to be such a noticeable difference.

There's an irrational part of me that is impressed by the bigger knife (the part of me that still laughs at the famous Crocodile Dundee line). The rational part of me will have an HK Khukuri to chop with, so I likely wouldn't find myself needing the large blade.

The ProGuide feels like a more versatile knife. It feels responsive, and a bit more like an extension of your hand than the Wilderness, whose size and bulk let you know it's there.

I joke with my 19 yo son that in my perpetual mid-life crisis there's an ongoing battle between "The Voice of Reason" and "The Idiot Within". The latter one usually wins, since there's usually more fun involved.
He (the latter voice) would say get the Wilderness... not to imply that this would be an idiot's choice, but it would be the decision that is more difficult to justify but is more likely to put a smirk on your face when you pick it up. :)

That is beautiful! One nice thing about having stag on knives such as yours or on Buzzbait's famous Doris is that you're much more likely to be able to use it often. If I pull out the Wilderness to help someone open a box or a letter, I don't think it would be seen in a welcoming light ("That's not a letter opener... this is a letter opener") :)

I'm hoping Buzzbait will again post his pic of Doris, the Queen of stag Doziers. It's Doris-envy that I blame for my recent acquisitions.

Those are some beautiful knives ya got there. I'm sure Buzzbait will soon be buzzing in with his comments and pictures. :)

What a wonderful way to start my day.... Dozier and stag!
Beautiful knives Mike, what a dilemma... hmmmm, which beautiful stag Dozier do I strap on today?
Congrats on your new knife.

Beautiful knivea all.
Lifter, I believe that is a "Companion" not a "personal".
I have a Companion in natural Micarta. My EDC fixed blade for about five years. Superb performer for it's size.

Don't know what to say. They are two beautiful knives. Wasn't expecting to see both in stag. I've always been a big stag fan. I own a PGK. As you said, it feels like an extension of my hand. Hard to say if either is nicer than the other. Both are incredible knives. Haven't had the pleasure of seeing or holding Bob's Wilderness Knife in person, though. Probably a good thing, or I'd own both myself.:D

Thanks for the feedback, Mike.

I struggle with my own "Inner Idiot," so I feel for ya! :D

Looks like you can't go wrong either way though, so you don't have to feel guilty listening to the Idiot.

I have never been a big fan of stag. But those 2 blades from the Dozier shop do bring out the best in them! The Wilderness model was made at the request of TK editor Steven Dick where the requirements were light chopping and prying capabilities. And the longer handles for more leverage/ larger hands, especially when wearing gloves. The old stand by Pro Guide model has been recommended by Bob many times as the knife to bring in the field if one were limited to what he can carry along. I' ve a plain jane micarta model in the shop that sees almost daily use for a few years now. Although the Wilderness uses thicker stock, it will cut well enough due to its very high hollow grind that results in a thin edge. Bobs D2 heat treat helps a bit too. :)

You won' t go wrong with either model. Just comes down to preferences and intended uses.

Beautiful knives Mike.

What could be better than a Dozier knife with beautiful stag scales. Two beautiful Doziers with stag. The Pro Guide makes a better "cutter"
because of the thinner bladestock used. The Wilderness is heavier but still not too large like many camp knives. I would hate to choose one way or the other. Both is the best choice.

Unfortunately, the stag is almost gone. If you are thinking about a Dozier with stag you'd better hurry.:D
