Here is my first (and most definitely not my last) HI khukuri. It's a 15" Ang Khola, bone handle. I need to go on the posting of the makers marks to see who made it. Ok, now my noob khukuri question. Point me in the right direction to learn. The 2 small knives that came with it, what are their significance, what are they normally used for. Both of them are basically knife shaped, but only one has any semblance of an edge on it. It's not really sharp at all but I can finish the edge but the other on doesn't even have any kind of edge on it whatsoever. Is this normal? No matter, here are the pictures:

That looks great, I really need to get myself an Ang Khola but I keep putting it off for these sweet deals that keep coming up. Trust me, this won't be your only one!

Congratulations on your first khukuri Xringshooter. Looks like Bhakkta did some good fuller work on that.
The little knife, that you will sharpen, is called a karda. Its for doing finer work that may be too awkward for your khuk. The blunt object is called a chakma and is used for realigning any rollover your blade may experience and can also be used to hone the edge. Enjoy your new blade and be safe.

And you're right...that one is only the first.

Edit: Pardon me, I meant to supply you with this link with lots of khukuri info;

Bhakta really seems to like turning his Ang Kholas into Dui Chirras. Not that I'm complaining, mind. He does beautiful work.

Very very nice, Looks like an excellent tool. I'm curious why first time buyers buy choose what they choose. I chose an M43 as my first HI purchase because it was reviewed well and seemed to be the length and weight I though was best for my planed use. How about you?

My first HI purchase was a Chainpuri and I chose that because I liked its looks. It is still a loved blade, although the Gelbu Special has edged it slightly in usefulness.

I picked mine after reading a few threads. It seemed to be a good starter. I know my next one will probably be a bigger one. I will be p-erusing the HI site to see which one appeals to me. I do a lot of limbing and such (I cut mu own wood for my wood burner and in many cases it looks like a khukuri would be easier to use to limb a felled tree than my chainsaw. So, in that case I might be looking at a bone cutter or something else. Anyone have any suggestions on what I need to look for next. I think I can handle something bigger (I'm 6' 3" and 270). At one time I actually wanted a full sized axe head on 15-18 inch handle. But now that I've found the khukuri, I know that one of these will do what I want.

The main HI web site doesn't show all the models, sizes and variations that are often available. I suggest that you spend some time browsing threads on this forum to get a more complete picture. The threads within the past year or two usually have pictures. Some of the older threads have had the pics removed, presumably because of space limitations.

If your hands and arm strength are in proportion to your size, you should be able to handle an 18" AK, CAK, ASTK or bonecutter with no trouble. All of them are certified for the kind of use that you describe. You should also pay attention to the weight and handle size. Yangdu always posts weight as well as length in her DOTDs.

Some people like even larger, heavier models. They seem to satisfy a primal urge, perhaps stemming from the days when we had to worry about saber tooth tigers and cave bears. I have that same urge, but I'm learning to resist it. Unless you're stronger than the "average" 270 pounder, you might want to go for a heavy duty 18 incher next, which would be quite effective in your hands.

That should be plenty for 3" branches, and you'll be able to lop off 1" and 2" branches without feeling that the blade is still hungry and wants to swing around and get a piece of you.

You could always go for one of the monster khukuris later, when you have more practical experience.

if you're an athletic 270 on a 6' 3" frame Id imagine you could handle just about anything in the lineup
Im 6' 3" with a 175lb frame and the 15"-18" khukus between 20-25oz are just right for me, my 17.5" sirupati can delimb anything in no time flat,

but a heavier/ longer knife is going to cut deeper more easily so long as you can handle the heft

Id suggest looking at the M-43 and 18" WWII as well as some of the excellent suggestions above

Hi Xring,
An AK 15 was my first khuk & is still my favorite. Can't be beat for handiness & versatility. I use it almost daily.

I think we have another common interest. I shoot in CMP Garand matches, Military bullseye & IDPA.

Well, that tells me you understand my forum name. I use it on several gun forums also. I shot competition while in the USAF and I also own a small gun repair business (one person, me). I've held a FFL since 1989. It's part time right now until I retire from my main job as a field engineer for a company that makes automated viscosity measuring equipment. I've shot a variety of disciplines over the years (NRA Bullseye, metallic shilouette, PPC and military (M-16 and M-9).

I may get a M-43 or WWII and just keep watchng the forum for a bonecutter to show up sometime.
