I wanted a simple, stress free project that I could start and finish in a day. I also wanted a new folder without breaking the bank. I picked up a 605 kit a few weeks ago and finally got around to putting it together this weekend. Boy-O-boy.. was this fun! I'm not sure what this handle material is.....it was given to me a last year. Anyone know?

Anyway, I enjoyed the project and was very impressed with the kit. The parts fit together very nice and all of the hardware was included. My task was to saw up the handle material, fasten it to the liners and shape it. I finished the wood with danish oil and wax so that is has a natural look and feel with out the "plastic" coating look of some of the more durable finishes.

I really like this knife! I showed my wife but she just nodded and sorta smiled....with a brief sign. You know the look....:(

So, whatta ya think?

Thank for looking,
Rob

:) Nice job! The wood looks great on the knife. I gave one of the 605 kits to my son for his last birthday and it was alot of fun to finish. He carries it often and it has proven to be a good user also.

Nice job Rob. The wood looks like walnut to me. It's hard to tell with pics though. Nice wood though.

:D Great looking knife

The wood is fantastic ! Where can I get one of the 605 kits . Sounds like a fun project for me and my 6 yr. son .

You can get kits to make yer own? How utterly cool. Where might someone find info on such endeavours? I believe that might be lotsa fun. My pops would go bannanas if I gave him a knife that I made, he already steals my store bought ones. Hes got two of my benchmades, and a serial numbered Case(Sheffield steel). A knife kit...wow, never even entered my mind, but its sounds like a blast.

Everybody ought to own one of these kits, and wood is the way to go on the handles. You can buy G-10 or micarta handle slabs that are pre-drilled. I boought the G-10, but that is nasty stuff to work with even with hand tools. I ended up working on them outside when it was good and windy. You can learn a little about just how much work goes into the finish work on a folder.

Wahooo! thanks for the kind words!

I got my kit from Koval Knives.... for $30 or so.

This kit was designed by Darrel Ralph...( no wonder it looks good:D)
I think he has some info on his web site... www.darrelralph.com

If you get one...have fun with it.

Take care,
Rob

Great Job! I really like the wood you used.
Does anyone have any idea when the other Koval kits by Darrel Ralf are comming out?
I'm really looking forward to making a few more. The first one I made was taken by my Dad, and I want to see whet else is coming out so I can make some for X-mas gitfs.

That looks awesome!

What kind of tools are needed to complete a kit knife?

Rob - great job! Not only do you get a new toy, you get to slap it together....can't beat that! :) I definitely want to get one, but I'm holding out until the damascus ones are ready. They are slow to come out since Darrel is profiling, grinding, etching, and HT'ing the blades (not that I am insinuating that DDR is slow :p ) This will be a good winter project where its too cold to go outside.

Howdy There ...Rob..!
Well, you done it now...! You are going to have to start using those great grinders that you make now...! The bug has bitten and it is all over. The next step is grinding your own blades, think ya did a great job on the kit....! Now you know wht us knife makers enjoy so much, good job.

Later "Possum"
