I just received this ebay purchase and have some questions about the proper use of this style of hewing axe. I know they are meant to have a long handle that allows the hewer to work standing on the log. What I'm not sure about is whether or not this style of head is suitable for swinging in at a shallow angle similar to European broad axes, or if it's only meant to be swung at a steeper angle. So far I've only found this video of the specific style head being used (from 30seconds to one minute)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueIB0h4SzHc

The non beveled side of this axe is almost perfectly flat unlike the common european broad axes which leads me to believe that it's not meant to be used at a very shallow angle. I'd appreciate any insight anyone may have.

want one, don't have one yet. keep the flat side flat, I would use it like a hewing hatchet. you can choke up on the handle and hold it right behind the blade if you need to shave some finer work. if you make a handle to try it out, I don't have a clue how long to go with it, but I may start about 24" long, but what do I know.

I've got several beam sized trees down right now, a few oaks and one madrone so I might just do some experimenting and see what works.
