Pics of recent work

In another thread people were asking for more pictures, so here is a gallery of the last three knives I've made. All are ground using files, finished using stones, files and sandpaper, and differentially heat treated and tempered right at home. It's a lot of work, but a lot of fun, too! Steel is 1084.

The first knife is being called "Darth Vader" and one day over winter I decided making a knife sounded like a good idea. I made it with a vague sense of Snody's/Spyderco's Ronin in the back of my head, but putting the two pics next to one another shows that the knives are pretty much completely different, with the exception to the straight edge.I traded it to another forumite. It has black G-10 scales with black Micarta pins.

The second one, below, is called Nemo and iit went to Nemo for some gems made by Fred and his proteges. I made it in the spirit and style of Fred Perrin's Street Bowies. It has a full convex grind on both sides of the blade and a little swedge on the spine to add a little visual interest. Handles are maroon linen Micarta finished to 220 grit held on with Micarta pins.

The third one, below, is another one in the spirit of the Street Bowie, but it has a totally different handle shape. It got a clay heat treat to make the wavy hamon and the handles are randomly textured G-10 with red liners underneath. They're held on with Micarta pins. Different from anything I've ever done, but it's available! (email me for details, otherwise I'm looking for BM31, Spyderfly, Dodo, etc!)

Wow, Steve,

That "Vader" doesn't look like much anything else I've seen. What're the specs (OAL, blade lenth, stock thickness?)? Looks like it'd be a great cutter with a comfy handle and a good thumb placement.

I like how all your knives so far have that deep integral front guard. That's something important to me and I find precious few knives have.

Super work. Keep it up and take care. :)

Thanks for the compliments! Unfortunately I don't have the knife anymore, so I can't measure it. I think I have a pic on one of my computers (probably the one at home, as that's how this usually works) with the knife and a ruler together, so if it's really important to you let me know and I'll try to find that picture. I think the blade was around 2.5" cutting edge, though. It's 1/8" thick.

How much for one similair to the nemo in 3 3/4" blade length?

Timeframe, etc? Blade steel?

Thanks, I may want two of them identical.

Brownie, please email me at agocs_s@hotmail.com. This isn't the appropriate forum to answer your questions, and I can't private message you! Drop me an email with your questions and I'll get right back to you. Keep in mind everything is done with hand tools, for the most part, so my turnaround time is kind of long. We're moving at the end of July and things are starting to get packed, so I could have them done before July, if not, then some time in August. A lot depends on how quickly we come up with a plan. Also, I don't work with templates and patterns, so every knife is a bit different.

Very nice Doc! I hadn't seen that Nemo and upswept blade -- sweet-looking blades.

Thanks! Technically, the Nemo has a drop point (at least as far as my understanding) because the point is quite a bit lower than the highest point of the spine. The long clip/upsweep gives it an illusion of being sort of Persian in style, but it's still functionally more or less a drop point. Nemo's taking the knife in the woods this weekend, so we'll see what he has to say after his trip!

I am very proud of that little Nemo.
As it has been able to pass all my tests with flying colors !

(one of them was my closest sheeple: my lovely wife !)

Steve's work is top notch at all level. His blade is "alive" and you take pleasure to use it in every moment of your knifenut life !

A review will be written for automn.

Cheers

JM
