Here is the final prototype of the replaceable poll hatchet. It came through pretty well. The first spike is a shrouded one and the second picture is a longer collared spike. I left the threads showing on the longer one so you can see how it attachés.

Now to make a using one!

looks great. have you thought about making a mattox head to screw on there for digging and prying with, it wouldnt need to be very large :D

Thanks! It's O1 steel. I would liked to have used 5160 but got a deal on 3/4" O1 from a machine shop here. I got 4 feet of it for $.1.00 a ft. :)

The collared poll was the first one I made. I hadn't thought of the shroud yet.

I have a hammer poll for it and a small hoe poll. I'm working on the hoe to double as an adz. That will come later. The first things were to make a good chopper, then a good tree step starter. I'm not really very keen on pushing any weapon accessories. I don't think I'm going to make one for my friend going to Iraq.

Oh...I have no idea what steel is in the spike. It's a turned #5 hardened bolt and the shroud is a turned rod coupling!

way to go Peter, that is 1 cool piece. looks like a real heavy duty blade too, NICE JOB.

Thanks Bill. It means a lot coming from the guru of hawks!

I cut out a new head this evening to make a keeper and thought of another mod I wanted to make so I changed the one in the picture some. I doubt I'll have time tomorrow but will give the changes a workout sometime this weekend. If they work, I'll make the keeper next week.

Good Job, looks like it'd make a great user, and with the spike would make a good war hawk.

Don's making a swiss army hawk!!! Very cool Peter, it's a very tough looking piece of work there.

Hey, pics came up this time! Peter, that's really cool! You must spend all your spare time thinking up these neat ideas. The long spike really looks wicked, and the blade could easily whang through armor and helmet. Then, you could use it to butcher the ox and chop the camp firewood that night, after the victorious battle. Well, you COULD!
