Just got back from a great overnighter on Lower Stewart Lake, Ontario. Thought I'd post some pics:

This is typical landscape in the Canadian Shield; lots of rock:

Some loons:

Beautiful mossy scenery:

Some flora:

The blades brought along... my wife uses the Busse BAD (with the blue handles)... it's a great size for her. I use the rounded/blunt-tipped Boye Basic-3 as a pfd knife. Also a Daniel Winkler, a rehandled Fallkniven F1, and a small Caffrey EBK-1 which I use as a pocket fixed blade:

Bannock with freshly picked wild blueberries and a few wild raspberries, and some cattail roots, cooked in the coals:

Awesome pictures!

I'm not sure if mosses count as flora...either way, nice photo.

Great stuff Walkabout - I especially like the Indian Pipe and Sunset shots.

Though buddy - how do you get along with all that 3rd rate cheap steel and packs???? Joking - man that is some awesome gear and your blueberry bannock has made me very hungry.

What models of MEC tents and how do you like them? I have the nunatuk and tarn-3. The nunatuk is bombproof but way too heavy. The nunatuk is great when split up between my wife and myself.

Really nice looking pics of some nice looking countryside, Walkabout. I'd love to try that kind of country sometime.

Nice trip!! What are the white sprouts in your "flora" pic? I noticed what looked like the identical plant while at Camp Tuscarora (outside Binghamton, NY) with my WEBELOW son, and I was curious what it was. Thanks! William

Now that's what it is all about!!!

Did you break the tip off that Boye, and then fix it up? Those used to be really popular it seems and I think that is first one I have seen here in WS&S.

I am guessing that Kirafu is the x-ray? Nice pack!

Thanks :) I enjoy good quality gear, and it all gets used as much as possible!

I had to go check the labels on the tents... it's been a while since we bought them. The smaller one is a Wanderer 2-person tent with the netting option (if the weather is good, you can sleep just in netting). The larger is a Wanderer 4 person tent. We like the tents just fine. I had to replace all of the elastic cord in the tent poles prior to this trip, due to wear-and tear. They get used a lot... our kids are all young adults now, and the only holidays they know is canoe trips. Never been to Disneyland, but they can all start a fire with a firesteel and tinder (never used newspaper etc) and are great with a paddle.

Hi,

I recently learned from a member here (goatariba) that these are called Indian Pipe

Thanks :)

I just got the Basic 3 from Boye last Friday... I ordered the non-pointy tip, and that's how it came. I actually does look the tip has been broken and then fixed up, but I guess there are a limited variety of ways to produce both a pointy version and blunt version from the same basic shape :)

I also own the pointy version of the Basic-3, as well as a folder. :o

The pack is a Gen2 XRay... it's great. I've taken it on numerous day hikes. It's heavier than many such packs, however that's the trade-off for such durability.

Hey Walkabout,

Nice pictures! In that 2nd picture is that Loons or Mosquitoes?

Where is Lower Stewart Lake?

Doc

Why is the tip blunt? Great pics, you saw some beautiful scenery and made some great memories!

Hi Doc,

They're loons :) I didn't much zoom on my camera. If this were Manitoba (where I live), those would be about the size of our mosquitos!

Stewart Lakes (Upper and Lower) are about 1.5 hours east of Kenora, just off of the Transcanada. We put our canoes in at the Stewart Lake Lodge, and paddle from there

Hi,

Boye makes two versions of his Basic-3 knife for marine/boating. The blunt tipped one is meant for scenarios where you might be at risk of a stabbing injury... mostly for rough seas, I believe. I picked the blunt one for my pfd as I envision that if I ever have to use it, I've spilled the canoe or kayak and have been caught up in something. I would be trying to cut free under water, with limited visibility, and probably cold and really scared :). I was thinking this would still let me free myself from rope/branches, but minimize the risk of me stabbing myself

Gorgeous pictures. That last one of the sunset is awesome, as is the one before it of the evening sky.

Thanks for sharing, and all the best,

- Mike

Thanks!

That's actually the sunrise from 6:30 AM today... I saw the orange glow in the sky and bolted for my camera and sat on the shore taking tons of pics :)

I had to wait a couple of hours for anyone else to get up, but it was a beautiful way to start the day!

Great pictures! Looks like you had a pleasant weekend.
If you have time to spare, can you do a quick pictorial on your pack?
