I just obtained this W49 and I searched the threads and used google foo in the hopes it wasn't a fake. It is suggested from my searches that it should be a version #8. What I find really curious is the #2 on the end of the downward facing guard.






 
Aftermarket addition for some unknown reason. Some type of identifying mark made to separate this one from the one marked with a 1 that is out there somewhere.

My first oddball guess is someone had twins and got identical knives for them but marked them to keep arguments down.
 
Thanks, I only have 1 other Western Bowie and it's a second version. I found it and it was missing the guard and the tang was broken or cut off leaving only about 3 inches. So I replaced the guard with deer antler piece and a cut off hatchet handle for the handle. I also have the original sheath but its not in great shape.
