Zukuri Tanto! Double full flat plungeless grind...

My place... steep all the way to the cliffs up top

Cool!

For the pic of the sun through the trees, try pushing the iso up a couple stops. I would try starting around 800 or so. Think of iso like the diameter of a bucket catching rain, high iso catches more water quicker, so more detail in low light, or in this case, the shadows. I believe you hold the iso button and spin the rear thumb dial to the right to up the iso.

The zukuri tanto is looking killer!

Will do on the iso! Thanks, I need to play with that stuff. Thanks on the tanto too!

Zukuri!!!!!
Daniel- You live the God's Country.

That's right! :D It's .36" thick and will be a chopping machine.

I do enjoy my place... it takes all day to climb to the top and back. You can see forever from the top as I'm literally on the first mountain of the range.

Back in the day, Phill Hartsfield would not make me a hira-zukuri blade. He said the hira-zukuri style would not be as strong as a knife with a ridge line. hmmm??? Po will not make me one either!? hmmm?
GO Daniel!!

Those crazy chisel grinders!!! :D

That's true on it not being as strong as one with a ridge line, more metal is stronger but to me it is like comparing Ferraris to Lambroghinis... there is a bit more to it though..

I'd need to know how they would grind one but one major difference between a classic Hartsfield Tanto and a Zukuri is the distal taper... it really makes it an entirely different knife. I usually do not do distal taper myself and it really is way different to grind one. Those guys are really known for their grinds and I see why they would not compromise greatness. A zero bevel Zukuri could be made but it would have to be convexed in my opinion... way outta the style range. To me knives like this are a fun challenge, almost like a hobby on the side as they are that different. ...Knife workouts to make my grinds stronger! :D

Awesome! Is the orange sheath for my backpacker?

Yes it is! I hope to finish it up tomorrow. :D I hope you like the orange, I think it looks awesome with the anodizing. Bright too!

Daniel- You pegged it! Good show!! ;)
Would a thinner barstock make it easier to do hira-zukuri style?
I'm saving $$ now.

:D

Thinner is usually easier because there is less metal to remove... once you get under 3/32" they get trickier because of flex.

This one is .36" but would be awesome in about any thickness, I'd like to do some with that grind in 3/16" or so too.

kuul!
Yes, that hira-zukuri would look funky on a Hartsfield-style blade but I think I'd like it! I THINK Po made one like that??

I agree and cool if Po made one!

I have been reading and I think technically a Zukuri is a blade with no ridge line but otherwise it's fair game. So many cool variations and options!

Sara has had this Spyderco Delica forever now and the tip has been broken as long as I have known her... I fixed the tip and swedged the grind for style! The spine was rounded and polished and I took lots of scratches out with a scotchbrite belt. I stropped the serrations on a wheel with a leather belt and they are the sharpest I have felt!

It looked a bit stubby after fixing the tip then the swedge made it all work well... she loves it and I have to say it is a cool knife now that it is fixed. It still needs some minor cosmetic work but will be used again!

Thanks! It was probably missing the last 3/8." I'm happy it is usable again! I'm going to work on it a bit more, it needs a soak in oil/minor rust removal.
