The proceedure I've used in the pictorial is actually a knife wrapping technique I learned from Ranger Rick. Here is an image from Ranger Rick's page...

If anyone is interested in rope work (like for sailing, etc), that wrap is a standard whipping wrap. In the old days of natural fiber cordage, you would wrap the end of the rope in a bit of whipping twine to keep the ends from fraying...

FoxholeAtheist's post demontrates online community at it's best! From this simple tid-bit of information I was able to Google up a ton of information about this rope technique! Including these images...

this looks like the same technique ron hood used in his woodsmaster volume 6 primative weapons video.

he used it to attach arrowheads to the shafts.
