This is very simmilar to the original prototype except for the color and the lack of the roller lock. It is a little bit smaller than the original with I thought was a little too big anyways. I am 6'4" and it fits my hand very well.

Nevermind, I see that they are now available.

Do you have a picture of the clip side? How tough is the green anodized finish? Scratch easily?

I was able to handle one of these beauties at the Fort Wayne Gun and Knife Show, last weekend. Let me tell you, the picture posted above does not do it justice. The blade is longer than it appears in the picture and the "stout" pocket clip mentioned is very short in length but does allow for a reasonably low carry in one's pocket. The Microbar system was rock solid and there was no blade play to speak of. I handled one for the better part of five minutes to get a good feel for it. After all, I didn't have the $190.00 to spend after I had made my rounds through the show. If I had only seen the Amphibian earlier I would have it in my pocket right now! Darn... I am looking forward to getting one in the future when they are easier to come by.
If there was a dislike, it would be the Schrade Cliphanger like thumb stud. It did make for a confident opening though.

Not to gripe cause the knife looks great! But, why does MT make their knives tip up without the reversable pocket clip? Is it safe for a lefty to carry in thier left pocket? I would worry about cutting myself. Suppose I was doing alot of physical work and the knife opened a little bit in my pocket? My friend did the same thing with his LCC and needed stiches. I'm just curious. Not upset. I will probably buy one anyway.:)

Something I heard, and I suggest anyone interested check for themselves, but if you want an Amphibian, or any other MT, you may not want to hesitate any longer.

The LCC didn't do as well as hoped for. Just hearsay on my part, but MT ain't doin' so hot. Someone with better connections should be able to say one way or the other with better detail. I hope its not the case, I want an LCC and a Tachyon. If they did overestimate the sales performance of their lineup, and with a recession, this could be a blow to the knife community. Don't want to alarm anyone, but if you want MT's, and they are in trouble, a whole mess of buying sure couldn't hurt anyone.

I'm surprised that the LCC didn't sell well. There was so many people on this forum praising it. I've handled a LCC and it had solid lock up and was a quality knife. I think the original prototype Amphibian was better because I liked the larger size and handle design. I hope MT comes out with more manual action knives since the LCC and Socom Elite are discontinued.

I guess we'll just have to sacrifice for the knife industry and buy a microtech. I'd hate to give up that money for a beautiful knife that I'll love forever. :)
Seriously, if MT is strugling, that would influence my purchase decisions. If that's true the forums should band together and have a "buy a microtech in the next six months." campaign. :)

Much like the some spyderco knives, it's a knife that any knife knut would appreciate but most ELUs just don't feel the need to spend that much on a knife that doesn't have a fancy lock or some other gimmick factor. Unfortunate but true, high quality but conventional knives don't sell as well as ok quality conventional knives.

I've had two MicroTechs (Socom and Kestral). Extremely well made but in a price range that reaches a narrow segment. They seem to rely a great deal on autos, which targets an even smaller percentage of buyers. They need a peoples knife. A EDC 3in blade in the $100 range.

:)

And a 3" EDC in something OTHER than 6061-T, perhaps the most overused, underthought knife handle material on the market today.

Professor.

This is an Ok looking knife, but I much prefered the original design. The fact that they decided not to go with that design has taken the luster off of this knife for me.

I have not heard anything about MT being in trouble, I hope that it is not really the case.

What Keith said...the original design was far superior IMO. Not that this knife is "bad".., but I'm suspicious of the frame coating for what the knife in intended for (without evidence of it's durability). I also don't like the thumb studs..(totally on aesthetic grounds), certainly a minute factor if the knife performs well, but I think it looks awful.

I am also NOT an MT basher.., and own many of their knives.

I do like the blade profile...LOTS!

I am NOT gonna knock Microtech. BUT, they did not fair well with their ultratech, and now as they venture into a more "tactical venue", this could have been a true "WINNER". HEY, it is a nice knife, it is a Microtech and as such, demands respect. But along with function, some "looks" and ergonomics play a role in one's buying decision.
The true LCC, the ones born in 1999/2000 were beauties. I, am still a NEWBIE so I have many MT's, lots of LCC's in several variations, including one of the newer LCC/DA's. There are some major QC issues with this LCC over the 'old ones".
Microtech is SUKING WIND:eek:   Go over to BA and find some one of a kind, absolutely eye-popping:eek:  MT's for auction. LOTS of them. Someone (DUH)is moving a MAJOR collection. If the Amphibian does not develop into a solid whopper-winner, the word is "belly-up for MT"
NO, I DO NOT KNOW THIS. This is rumor, gossip, inuendo. But one just has gotta look at this new knife and wonder: who REALLY made it, why was it made in this style and WHAT happens if it spins out just like the UT-6??????......IMO, ONLY.....wolf
