We're experiencing some colder than normal weather down here around Houston and I've been wanting to take some shots of my collection in different groupings. Here's what I came up with. Enjoy!

Fantastic! Really nice group of knives and a great display too. Did you make that, Chuck?

I especially love the jigged blue bone. Very classy imo:thumbup:

Great shots Chuck. You have some outstanding knives. I really like the 885UH with the Everlastingly Sharp etch. Is that a Herman Williams? I've never seen that etch on an Uncle Henry before. I can see you are "going to need a bigger boat".

Yes sir, they are both H. Williams pieces. Yeah, I'm not sure which way I want to go for storage at this point. This case is great for displaying, but if you want to coon-finger them for any reason it's a pain in the rump! Thought about trying to find a nice wood machinists tool box/ chest. Lots of drawers and it makes for a more authentic feel, but man are they pricey!

I'm sorry Dave! When I read through the posts the first time I missed your question about the case. Yes, I did make it. It is made from some mahogany that my dad had leftover from a cabinet job he did a while back. Granted it has its flaws because I did not have all of the right tools to make it the "correct" way, but it turned out pretty nice for what it's for.

...only knife fanciers can appreciate how beautiful your collection is Aggie...are you their coach for the synchronized swimming?....simply breathtaking..love 'em. well done.Hoo Roo

Chuck - WOW!! What a group of FINE knives.

You've a great eye for the Schrades. Your mahogany display is nice and the pin-holder technique is cool.

I've also been thinking about the tool-box approach for storing and displaying.
There's a lot of good choices out there - hard to tell from the websites and catalogs whether they are Made in USA or not. The Grizzly catalog has some very nice wooden component setups - lots of space.

Have noticed there are similar type boxes with drawers for collectible pens - not sure if they'd fit our knives.

Love the HW's. The 885UH with the etch is unique!

I have a Gerstner International GI-532. It is newer and less expensive than the solid wooden ones. I got it off the bay a couple years ago for around $125.00. It was a damaged freight item with one cracked drawer. It can hold a $#!+load of knives, but mine ran out of room pretty fast. Another option is to look for old wooden cases that silverware came in at garage sales. I have one of them that holds about 30 - 35 knives in the top and another drawer for boxes and tubes.

The GI-532 is modular and has a base and a rolling cabinet option, but I've never found a bargain on either of the bottom optional pieces.

when not displaying as i am now on my pool table i keep mine in a red tool cabinet with multiple drawers like the wooden one below. i like that one for 125 though nice catch. i just love wooden things. (not counting my knives)

That Gerstner is beautiful. I think Harbor Freight has Chinese knockoffs. I have knives in cigar boxes, tackle boxes, apple boxes (sheaths, boxes, paperwork, etc.), drawers, cubbyholes, doors of the pickup and car, etc, etc; you get the picture. But I have purchased several carry cases for pistols, and they are very nice. Padded foam interior. Lockable. The ones I get would hold maybe 4 1911 Colts. So when the caldera at Yellowstone decides to blow I can grab the best stuff up and head to Pittsburgh. lol. oh... and the wife and dog.

I've looked at those Gerstner chests a number of times. The problem I run into is that while it would be great to store the knives, then I'd have to store it! I hate to admit it, but we're just slap out of room in our little house and with baby number two coming in April, I'm going to have to put my grand knife storage dreams on hold for a while and make due. My house looks like my display case, full to the brim!

Absolutely sweet collection there!!! Some beautiful knives! If you run out of storage space, just sent them to me. I'll hold them for ya!

In terms of storage, if you like the Gerstner that Hal showed, also keep an eye in the local classifieds and craigslist. I got the top two units in his picture off craigslist still in the shipping box for about $225 a couple years ago. That is for my fine woodworking tools though.

For knife storage, my wife found me a cabinet I don't think I will ever fill up. It's an old oak cabinet from George Washington University that used to hold microscope slides. THOUSANDS of them. It has 97 drawers (actually started life with 108, but 11 are missing). Each drawer is about 11 inches wide on the inside and about 1 1/4" deep, and about 24" long. The cabinet itself is about 42 inches high, 27" front to back, and nearly 7 feet long! I shudder to think what it's going to cost me just to line the drawers with felt or velvet!

So again, if you need extra storage space for that lovely collection, I'm your man!!

very very nice grouping aggie!! really nice examples and some great bone too.

hey tongueriver whatcha been hacking with that little cleaver!

I do not "hack" with my cleaver; that is strictly for filleting panfish. And I know of at least 3 more 165's that I "need." :)

Glad you asked. Here is a closer picture of my necklace:

Here is where the claws came from:

A critter not to be trifled with if you don't know what you are doing.

Great necklace and great pics Hal! I have never caught (or seen) an Alligator Snapping Turtle in the wild because there aren't any in Canada but I've caught innumerable Common Snapping Turtles over the years.

Never hold a common snapper at the front of the shell as shown in the picture of the alligator snapper! The common snapper has a very long neck and must be held by the rear of the shell only just above the hind legs or it will remove a finger for sure. They will try and scratch you too but if you grab shell above its hind legs it can't do that either.

I've been catching these all my life but I was properly trained to do so. If you get it wrong you will be bitten so I can't say as I recommend trying to figure out how to do it on your own. It's something that needs to be demonstrated.
