Picture posting etiquette...

I would just like to remind everyone that when you post an image in a thread, it posts as the size it is and does not adjust to screen size like text does.

What that means is that when someone posts a w-i-d-e image in a thread, the whole thread ajdusts to the size of the image. So, for those of us who have 14 or 15" monitors, or like keep BFC in a smaller than full screen window, that means we have to keep scrolling back & forth to read the thread. aaaarrrggghhh!

All of us should be posting thumbnails. These load a lot faster, a consideration for those of us at the end of skinny wires. It is easy to learn; if I can do it, so can you.

Good point. Can you post the UBB code for establishing a thumbnail?

RH...you can solve your problem with a 21" high res screen. They're as addictive as a Sebenza (if you're a computer nut)!

I can't live with a 15" anymore. (OK, I'm spoiled!)

Yes, the thumbnail aspect is something I just learned...nice feature.

Anyone know an instruction page with a complete listing of correct UBB code? The page I printed off did not have correct info. I followed commands exactly for font size and color, and centering commands, and the instructions were wrong...cause it didn't work. Thanks.

When someone posts a real large photo at Community, I generally edit the thing and make it a hyperlink.... that's where ya type
Code:
[url="http://www.whatever.com/photo.jpg"]Click Here[/url]

Ya know?

VG,

You had better stay away from my pics (I have you home address... Remember the package with all the tape??)

I'm with Ron on this one. Buy yourself a 21" Monitor... and while you are at it, get a DSL hookup....

But, in consideration of those who don't want to opt up, posting thumbnails is a great option. Also keeping photos under 600 pixels in width will help those with 1989 monitors...

Humor aside, I'm probably guilty of posting a photo or two that's too big. I'm always set at a high res monitor setting on a big screen...with DSL. So I'm not always as sensitive to everyone else. I'll be more careful in the future.

Outside of the Gallery Forum where you can post photos at will, I've generally advised people to keep pictures to less than 500 pixels width and less than 50K file size.

One nice thing to do is to post a small, maybe 300 pixel wide version of your picture, and then give a link to the larger version for those with bigger pipes who would like to see it.

It's not just a matter or your pipe size either. You can be sitting on the end of an OC3 and it can still take forever to download a picture if the server that picture is on is overloaded or if there's congestion on the network somewhere. And why would there be congestion on the network or an overloaded server? Maybe because 10,000 bladeforum members are trying to download some huge picture. So, it's just good internet etiquette in general to post a small picture and then a link to a large picture for folks that really want to see it.

One thing that annoys me, though, is people who start a thread titled "Picture of my new knife" and when you click on it and wait for the thread to download, all there is is a link to the picture which you then have to click on and wait for it download. I know, I sound like George Jetson, "It was an exhausting day at work today... I had to push the button THREE times..."

My other complaint is people posting worthly tiny thumbnails. I can't see anything in a fifty-pixel wide picture. Why even post it? Post a 300-pixel-wide picture and then a link to the big one. At least in 300 pixels I can see enough to know if I want to see the big one or not.

While monitors have certainly come down in price the past few years, not everyone can/will afford a 21". I got a 19" with my new Dell last year, and I am frequently required to go shifting back and forth to read a thread.

I'm rapidly losing what memory I once had. So, may not recall correctly what I should about resolutions setting. But, I'm convinced that some threads where I have to scroll 5-6" are being done on 21" monitors, or even larger, with a super high resolutions setting. I think if everyone stuck with 800/600 we'd all be just fine. I've seen more than one knife picture done at some unholy resolution, that I would have liked to use as wallpaper, but have not chosedn to do so, simply because I can't get enough of a 4" folder -- open -- to fit on my screen.

Hey Bugs...I haven't used 800/600 in probably five years. I can tell a very noticable difference between that res and higher resolutions. I can understand that not everyone has the same sized screen or sets their monitor resolution at the same setting, but as a 17" monitor seems to the be the new basic standard, monitor resolutions need to rise as well. At some point, people will need to upgrade their monitor because it is too small, similarly to people upgrading their processor because it is too slow.

Anytime I get a new computer or work at a new computer for something more than a few brief minutes, I go straight to the control panel and adjust the monitor and mouse settings.

OK...just a little pet peeve.
