Pictures of 3D Native?

It's the new Native to come, quite similar to the old one, just the handles are more beefier (as I heard others gossip).

Is the old Native going to be discontinued then? Hope not, so little money - so many Spydercos yet to buy! :(

As I understand it (and I'm sure somebody all official-like will come along soon and correct me if I'm wrong :D ), the 3-D Native is complementary to the current model. I believe the 3-D is a Seki City knife made with VG10 as an alternative to the American 440V model.

Iff'n I could search, I'd check ;)

Hi Ken. It is as Grover says. The 3d or "Native III" is basically the same pattern (some slight ergo mods), but it does not have flat scales. The handle is formed in a 3 dimensional shape.

VG-10, FRN, ambi wire clip.

No pics until the mold is finished.

We'll have the 3D "Assist" and "D'Allara" Rescues before the Native III.

Sal,
Sounds good, but what's with the wire clips? At first I liked them, but after my experiences with them on the Salsa, they really turn me off...especially on a hard use knife like the Native.

Sal: I need that native!!!!!
I love my native, and actually carry it more often than even my Renegade, which is one of the blades that I love very much too.
Can't wait to see it.

Sal,

The mods sound great - I really like VG-10 Blade Steel, and it seems that dimensional scales will give the knife (knives) a better hand feel (a little more heft and a more secure grip) with out much, if any, weight trade off.

A couple (or threesome) of questions. First - and I am trying to read between the lines here, are you thinking about having basic change in the form factor of the scales of all your FRN knives?

Second, does this mean that there will be more than just a change in the medalion to differentiate between the D'allara rescue and the "World Trade Center" memorial knife? Or will there be two versions of the D'Allara? Or, does the WTC knife have dimensional scales? (I haven't seen the WTC knife other than the pic on your website, and I can't quite tell it those scales are dimensional or not).

Third, what is the "3D Assist" model? This is one I have not heard about.

Thanks,

Chuck

I don't have any experience with wire clips; I only hope the 3D Native (Native III) retains its genuine ambidexterity, tip up carry, and ability to move the clip to either side.

First thing I didn't like was that they were extremely hard to remove and replace. The second thing was that they feel too flimsy. I think that on the Meerkat, the wire clips are ok because of the small size. But on a larger knife, that length of wire bends side to side too much. Just my opinion though. I really like where Spyderco is going though, keep up the great work!

Thanx Jazzman. I'll keep that in mind. The goal is to improve.

The bending of the wire clips is akin to the tips of an airplane wing being flexible. There is some give so the clip doesn't tear, scatch or break out of the FRN base. As with all new concepts, there will be a learnng curve as to what is the best material, thickness, hardness, fastening method, etc. etc.

Sal, I think Jazzman is right about the part how hard it is to change the sides of the wire clips. I tried it on the salsa and I have to loosen the scales to get that ring thing out so that I could take the clip out.
I like the Native already, and I think an improved ergo would be great. VG10 takes a sharp edge, but I think 440V cuts thing very aggressively. I'm starting to appreciate the 440V more.

I'm looking forward to this model, and adding a 4th Native to the 3 I already own. I hope the wire clip takes care of the one problem my FRN Native has had - the clip getting caught on something and tearing out of the depression in the FRN. It will be interesting to see how Spyderco can further improve on this classic!

We're looking at sometime around April for the Native III and the Assists. both have VG-10 blades.
