I've had some requests to post pictures of this thing so here it is!
I built this grinder from junk. The frame is made from square steel tubing I got from an old metal desk. It has an 8inch replacement Grizzly contact wheel, idler wheel and shaft made by Rob Frink. The motor is an open frame 2hp from HarborFreight with a "Pantyhose air filter" :) I've only ground 2-3 blades on it so far and it works great!

Maybe this will inspire some other fledgeling bladesmiths to build there own too!

Thanks,

That's pretty neat Derek. It must work and you used recycled materials. Nice job!!!!:)

Cool looking grinder Derrick! Check out my site below for details of how I built my 2x72 from an old excercise bike. Rob Frink also built my wheels for mine. Very nice guy. Cory

Sure, here's a knife me and my friend Chris Crawford made together. He ground the bevels in on my home built grinder. He's got more experience grinding than I do so he ground it.

I also ground my first folder blade on it here's a pic of it:

The only problem I've seen with the grinder so far is that I need to adjust it so that the contact wheel is more accessible. It flat grinds like a champ though.

Thanks for the comments!

That looks great ! what about small wheel attachments, is it possible ? Cool job.....RDT

Anything is possible when you make it yourself. ;) I made it entirely with a nuts-n-bolts approach so that I could add or remove peices and parts as I need to. I've thought about putting a small wheel arm to come out front when I need it. I think I could do it if I can figure out a good design for it and just decrease the tension on the belt spring.

it looks great, you should be proud. i flat/convex grind only. but i am glad that i havr the contact wheel to profile with.my rhino grinds have a lot of upswept blades and i do the profile on the 10", 6", 2" or 1/2" or 3/4".
