uncleknife told us about the knives he got back from Bodycote in this thread. He was kind enough to pass along some pictures for the forum. The first knife is a Benchmade Griptilian:

I think that uncleknife negotiated his order before Bodycote stopped taking individual orders.

Thank you Rev. Pete, for posting these pix for me, I really appreciate it!!!

I contacted Ms. Smith on 8/27/02 & she agreed to handle my order, but I didn't actually send the order til mid september.

I wish the pictures could have shown the vast difference between the VERY matt finish of the sand blasted Spyderco worker & the smooth brushed finish of the Benchmade Griptilian, night & day difference.

As you can see by the workers edge, I had to really sharpen the worker as the sand blasting made it VERY dull.

If Bodycote is still taking orders, I recomend you send like-new knives (no scratches as they WILL show thru the coating), preferably ones you can remove the blades from & have them coated as-is, no blasting, that way you won't have to remove the coating from the edge resharpening it...I don't know if this will make the edge last longer or not, but the griptilian sure is the prettiest of the ones I had done.

If I had known for sure, how nice it would have looked, I would have sent in my Benchmade 921 Switchback blade.

Good luck to you all in negotiating with Bodycote, I hope they will work with you, as I will probably want to send future knives to them to coat... maybe with the rainbow coating .

I have been thinking about sending my Strider GB in to Bodykote. Could you tell me if they coated the cutting edge, and you had to sharpen it off, or did the knives come back with the cutting edge un coated. Also, please cut and past the website that did the work. They look really nice. Thanks, Reagan

SOX, I don't think they do individual orders anymore. I've been thinking about setting up a massive Bladeforums order, like around 20 knives or so. They just might accept such a large order.

About coating the edge, yes, I've heard the edge gets coated and you'll have to resharpen. You might want to send it off to Strider to have them do it for you. You'd also want to remove the blade and send just that (and any other hardware you want coated, e.g. clip).

AlphalphaPB, Thanks for the info! I will keep that in mind. I'm still looking for the spanner wrench so I can take my GB apart. It might have been Diamondkote that I am thinking of, or a company that uses Diamondkote. They quoted mr $20 for the knife and $250 for my Remington 870 with 2 barrels.
Heres the web site that gave me those quotes. If you know anything about them please speek up. Thanks, Reagan

That's a great idea. I'd probably partake in that, as I'm mucking the striped finish on my GB a bit.

Not only would I send it back to Mick for resharpening, I'd be tempted to send it to him for disassembly prior, and just have him keep the hardware until I resend the blade for sharpening.

Yes, the edge does get coated, but unless you ask them to sandblast the blade first, you do NOT need to resharpen the edge.

I had some knives that were scratched up & wanted them blasted first to remove the scratches. These needed to be resharpened, but the blades that were only coated were still razor sharp after coating.

I don't know if it will add to the edge retention or not, but until the edge wears off, it will be totally rust proof.
