Who all has used pie cookers on campouts? Those iron things with the long handles that you put two slices of bread in with filling, then stick in a fire. Ive had one for decades and they work . What kid is not impressed with a hot apple pie on a cookout. Hot ham and cheese sandwiches. My favorite fillings are pizza ingredients .

The one I have is old , dont know the make, and round. Newer ones Ive seen are square. Dont know how good they work.

They are not a gimmick. They keep the kids entertained and make scrumptious pies.

never thought of making a pie in one, that sounds great. I always just thought of them as a grilled cheese thing.

Now I want an apple pie when I go north next week.

We always had them when I was a kid and my sons now demand daily pizza "mountain pies" when we are camping. I make breakfast pies as well...basically whatever is left over from breakfast chopped up with some cheese added. If you want to get really fancy.....get those tubes of croissants and use that dough instead of sliced bread.

I love those things

I fill them up with peanut butter and marshmallows, for a toasted fluff nutter sandwich.

Strawberry jam makes an awesome pie too.

IIRC, we used to make them with pillsbury crescent roll dough, and possibly cookies, but the Scoutmaster was a campfire super cook.

I grew up in SoCal and we called them "taco toasters". Very handy and entertaining when camping!

Hey Guys...

Yaaa We use Hobo Pie makers ALL the time..

We had one Cub dad that came with a backpack of stuff and just sat and made hobo pies for all of the kids in the evenings.. He was a Pro at it, and each one came out perfect Every time...

This is Sarah.. Our Resident Pie Goddess.. She is Also fast becoming a pro at the Hobo pies...

As you can see, she has things WELL under control....

As far as the pie irons go...

I highly suggest getting the irons that are made by Rome Industries.. Cast Iron, made in the US and are the Original pie irons..

Stay away from Aluminum, and Especially ones coated with Teflon...

The temperatures are much too hot for teflon,, which becomes toxic when overheated...
We've had an aluminum one actually melt down...

Yeah, I don’t use it often. I was first introduced to them when I lived in Germany back in 1964. The one I have is made by Toas-tite, it’s a heavy cast iron and makes two at a time, mom bought back then, some how I wound up with it :). I always wondered how it would do with phyllo dough.

I ended up getting the ones my grandfather used when I was a kid, The are at least 35 years old, but work great, I have made a few pies for my kids in them, just over our backyard fire pit, the loved em...

good times..good times

I heard pies and camping and first thought of a dutch oven :p

We used to make some AWESOME cherry and peach cobbler in my scouting days.....mmmmm.....my taste buds miss those days :D

I've never used one of those, but I have seen them before. I always thought it was a campfire toaster, so I guess I was right on the money :)
