Good Mooornin' Vietnam!
Oh... no, let me try again:

Hello, custom knifemakers, collectors and users!

With a cap in hand I invite you to share with me and all other members of this forum the custom pieces of edged inspiration which you made(knifemakers), or you had received(collectors, users) as present for/from someone!

Also, if someone helped you big time on your project(spend his/her time for you without to expect wages), show us the finished blade and tell us the story behind.

I think the close community relationships are great subject to talk about after hours work at the anvil... or wherever you give your soul on daily basis.

And please knifemakers, don't be shy, I'm sure you love the smell of napalm in the morning!
Oh, blunder... that was from another movie

On behalf of the apprentices in my shop I'd like to post a knife that was a demonstration piece built between Ramon (one of my apprentices and Burt Foster). Burt came to my shop here in Nicaragua to devote his time to teaching the art of blade-smithing to a couple of young men who have shown great potential. Burt concentrated his teaching on two of my students, Jaime and Ramon. In the following picture you'll see one of the finished pieces. The blade was forged and finished by Ramon and Burt made the handle for it. There are still two knives yet to be finished. One of the others was forged by Burt and Ramon will, in turn, make the handle for that one. Jaime will complete the third blade on his own. When they are done I will post a picture of all three. Thank you Burt for investing your time, energy and love into men who will never be able to repay you. I believe that is the definition of selfless not to mention the promotion of blade-smithing.

Mike

P.S. I just noticed that this blade still has a lot of oil on it so it looks rather unfinished. When I take a pic of all three finished pieces I will make sure to clean them up better.

Here you go - father's day present from my daughter (with Mom's help) and Dan Farr's collusion. My daughter's name is engraved on one side of the guard, mine on the other:

when I had Jason Knight make me this knife, I sent a pretty rudimentary sketch to him and he interpreted it thusly,

The knife has become almost a cult classic, due in part to this thread; http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=692256

So, the story that comes with this post is that just around a year after I received the knife I was serendipitously able to attend a knife making course at Dave Lisch's Studio 4 Knife Making School. And the instructor? Jason Knight! Now, fortunately, Jason didn't copy my design. Rather, he took the cues he thought were pertinent to the functionality of my design and then redesigned the knife based on his own outlook. Well, during the weekend long course I took, I not only got some major insight into his design process, but also into his outlook.

This thread is somewhat about comradeship and for me, this knife really means a lot from that standpoint. I've been offered somewhat more than I paid for it on more than one occasion, but the SMC is now an heirloom and an object which I never tire of. That it was the first step toward a friendship with the man who made it also imbues it with significance.

It is the same feeling every time I take the SMC's handle in my hand. Hard to explain, yet an essentially fulfilling feeling. It's JUST RIGHT, all of it:).

I just got this today. Think early Christmas present. I’m not waiting on Santa- he missed my place last year.

When I think of knives and fellowship probably the first thing that springs to mind is a sleepless 3-day weekend of non-stop knifemaking with Matt gregory and Dan Farr as we somehow managed to take the Mojo camp knife from a sketch to a completed knife:

Great knives and stories guys.

That was way too much fun... wonder if we could do it faster this time now that we're both old pros.

just kidding. ; )

Got up the gumption and opened her up. Pretty small for a Steigerwalt, but really, really nice! A lot of intricate carving on a knife this small -- it's only about 3 5/8" closed with a 2.75" blade. I think the next one will be one of those 3 1/2" bladed babies with the carved stainless and raised gold pins ... assuming I can get a second mortgage to buy it. ;)

Here is a "Melted Gold" lockback folder that Dellana recently made
especially for my wife and also named it "Tehiya" after her.

Next to it is a "Melted Gold" pendant Dellana made for her some
years ago,shaped like the lucky-charm five-fingered Hamsa.

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)
