Most of you know we are on vacation visiting family. We are staying at my grandmoms old house (she's in an old folks home w/ alzheimers). No one has cleaned out her house so the mr and I are going through some of the 'stuff'. My grandfather was a us marshall who retired three days before I was born. We found his resume and newspaper articles about him. HOLY COW!

He provided courtroom security. For the trials of:
Jimmy hoffa
Mohammed ali
Dr.spock

He helped develop the witness protection program

He was part of bobbys bastards.

There was a movie made called 'hide in plain sight' based on the marshalls (him too) protecting a mafia informant for 3 months around the clock.

Its amazing! There's a list 2 pages long of things he's done. He passed in 1993 and at the time I was to young to appreciate his roll in some major historical events. What I would give to have 5 minutes with him now. Not just as my grandfather but as the marshall. I sure do miss him!

It's always cool to find out thing about you family. I found some of my grandfothers things from WWII in his house when he passed. My grandma let me take a SS ring his paratrooper wings, and a 98k musser. She said i can have a few other things when she found out if my uncle wanted anything.

Great find! What an interesting person. I mean, Hoffa, Ali?! How cool that must have been, and a little scary even for the toughest dudes. :D

Great find I hope you and yours will enjoy the history. It is always fun to learn something about someone especially about loved ones in this fashion. Enjoy.

Wow. Nice. It's funny how perspective changes the older we get on those we think we know/knew.

I'm a history major and I love history. Its really cool to find out about what your relatives did in the past. I have a relative who signed the Declaration of Independence for example. Really cool!

wow.. what a cool find.. that's some cool family history right there... your granfather sounds like he was bad a$$... i would be stoked...:)

i bet he would have loved an RC-3 to carry around...

That's really neat! I like history as well.

Enjoy your trip & be safe!

What a treasure you found. That is very cool! Sorry to hear about your grandmother. If you can take the opportunity to talk to some of the elderly in the ECF (Extended Care Facility) your grandmother lives in. I worked in an ECF for many years and I have talked to quite a few elderly, they all have one thing in common to say, "do it while your young". Talking to the them is a great way to learn about life in general, they have alot of life experience to share. It also is therapeutic for them to engage in conversation, some don’t have anyone else in their life. That is a great find, you must be so proud of your grandfather. Sometimes Alzheimer’s affects short term memory, and long term memory remains. Your grandmother may remember things about your grandfather from long ago.

Glad you found that before it just got thrown out. It's amazing how in our youth we take our grandparents for granted, they are a wealth of information.

My Paternal Grandfather died a few months before I was born. My Maternal Grandfather died when I was 6. They both used to make knives as a hobby. I have now taken up the hobby, though my Father never has. What I would give to spend some time with them! I love learning about my ancestors. A cool free website is www.familysearch.org.

My dad fought in Belgium (the Bulge) and Germany in WWII - he was awarded a bronze star but has refused to tell anyone why. I'm hoping that when he passes (and may that not be for a long time) that I'll find the commendation in his war souvenir box.
