piecing together disc grinder

I'm intent on a disc grinder for helping with my slip joints. I considering the nice pre-built machines like Tru Grit, or Vashti Disc grinder with motor, disc, nice toolrest, tilting table... with accompanying price tag. Or buying individual componets and putting one together.

-decent but not mainstream motor,
-second tier VFD, not a KBAC.
-buying basic 9" wheel. (long term is Nielson system)
-Maybe this stand/frame from USA knifemaker for vertical and horizontal operation: https://usaknifemaker.com/knife-dogs-disc-grinder-stand-motor-disc-and-vfd-not-included.html

I haven't started pricing those components out to see where it would fall cost wise, but wondering if anyone else went through this exercise.

thanks

For slipjoint making it is best to have a table on your disc grinder like the one on TruGrit.

You need a table that goes behind the disc and a disc that is beveled on the back side.

Also you need have a "forward" and "reverse" .

I got the TruGrit base and disk, which is also a backbeveled disk so perfect out of the box for slip joint back squares. I found a brand new 3 ph - 1/3 hp Leeson for less than $100 shipped. I just wired on a plug and connect into my 2x72 vfd which already has fwd/Rev switch wired in and good to go. I think I got about $500 invested. For what I'm doing with it that 1/3 hp motor is plenty. If I could have found a brand new motor with higher hp for the same price I'd have gone with it but the 1/3 gets the job done with ease for me.

The Nielson Disc System is a game changer. I can go from any grit size in seconds.

It is expensive, that being said I have 5 discs and it really speeds up the work.

I went with a 3/4HP motor and VFD, Beaumont chassis, and Neilsen disc system.
I also added a horizontal grinder with a curved work rest to the system with a switch to change the VFD from one unit to the other.
