Alright, I am sitting here in the land of Lincoln with no source for this sweet nectar of Scotland. So I want to know, for those who have found it, where did you get it. I have some more traveling to do next week between Appleton and Milwaukee and if I can find it in liquor stores up there, I want to know where some of you hogs found it. So sound off!

Is this stuff good, or is it a CBL thing? :)
Also, is it highlands of lowlands or islands? I'm not much of a fan of the burnt swamp flavor a la Johnnie Walker.

It tasted pretty good to me whan I tried it last weekend. Now, where to get it!?!?!?!?! I could order it on line, but the miser in me doesn't like $12.95 in shipping charges!

It's actually a fairly cheap ($19 a bottle) blend... not bad, but there are many, many others to choose from that are much, much better.

You'll have to pay a bit more for the good stuff... like single malts.
Aberlour a'bunadh is fantastic - and a little goes a long way. It's bottled at cask strength... 59.6% = about 120 proof:thumbup: !!! It runs $67 a bottle in my neck of the woods and is well worth every cent.
Another really nice selection is The Balvenie Doublewood 12 year - quite nice at $55 a bottle.
Additionally, any of the Glenmorangie Wood Finish range - they're fantastic. They all run about $55 a bottle as well.

Not bashing Pig's Nose - there's just many other :D Scotch Whisky's:D that are so much better I had to chime in here.

Might I suggest you check out the highlands / speysides as I am of the same opinion as you... if I wanted the "burnt-swamp" flavor, I'd just go out back and lick the grill on my BBQ pit:barf: .

And while I'm at it, in addition to the three I mentioned already, Dalwhinnie 15 year old (from the highest distillery in Scotland) and Oban 14 year old are also truly excellent single malts in the $50 - $65 range.

I have pricey stuff sitting around, but I am a miser and if I can save cash on booze, then that means there is more money for knives. :D

Thanks for all the good advice, and apologies to Progunner for kind of hijaking the thread...:)

It may be slightly unfair to compare the Pig's Nose to superior single malts though. I am quite a fan of the expensive stuff, but like Progunner, I also have an appreciation of a more "everyday" drink.

Good scotch is usually worth the money spent, but like steel there is a point of diminishing returns, that point where one additional percentage point of goodness will cost an additional $100. My palate is not refined enough to justify those just yet, and I regret that I have only one liver to give to this quest... There's definitely something to be said for the $20-30 range, just as it is very easy to find wines at $14 that taste and accompany foods better than $40-70 bottles.

So with that in mind, how would the esteemed experts of malts compare Pig's Nose to others in the >$30 range? It may have to be a special request from my local dealer, after all.

JWB,

While I'm certainly no expert, allow me to recommend two single malts that might fit nicely into your "everyday" category...

Auchentoshan 10 year old - should set you back at just under $30 bottle.

And while it's a bit more, The Balvenie 10-year-old typically runs right at $40 bottle.

Neither of these have the cool Pig's Nose label, but, in my opinion, are much nicer than any blend I've tried to date. Again, just a personal taste thing. And from what you said earlier, I think you'd probably like either.
Of course, to those who favor the heavy PEAT taste, either of these would be like drinking bottled water... or Coors light :barf: ... same-same:D .

Let me know if you try either of these... and if you do, and don't like them more than Pig's nose, I'll send you $30.

Regards,
~tp

Kev, I may be coming through your area soon. I'll give you a call if it is at a decent hour, unless you drop me a line and say something like your sleeping at work because you are so busy or, don't drop in because Jody is still steamed. You know what I mean.
