First, I'm not looking for a value or to sell.

I picked up an HK 14402SBK today from a local surplus store. No box but in unused condition.

As you can see from the pictures, it's etched. Special forces insignia fwiw.

I know the pika is considered a budget beater generally and picked this up with the intention of just that. However, I got to wondering. What is the minimum quantity to have "club" knives produced? Should I toss this in my back pocket and enjoy it or let it sleep comfortably in a lock box?

My knowledge of Benchmade knives is limited and I appreciate any opinions.

You can have any retailer with a laser engraver do that for 1 or 1,000 knives. No need to have a group buy to get it done.

I agree with Rev. Laser engraving has gotten hugely popular to a point that not only can Benchmade do custom designs, but many dealers can also do them in-house. In addition to being able to engrave text, it can do pretty detailed image designs as well.

If you like the design, I would say use it. While the quality and performance is not similar to a Benchmade Blue Class or Black Class knife, it's a decent quality knife for the competitive pricing it was originally in, and IIRC I believe it is AUS-8 steel, which is good entry-level steel. However, the Pika is out of production and BMs that are not in production and new do tend to go up in value pretty quickly. The engraving can work for and against value, depending on what the engraving is and if a collector sees that as a plus or minus. Plain edge blades generally sell for more, and items with the original box are generally considered more desirable. Most likely the standard Pika will not be a huge collectors item, but the Ti Pikas commend pretty high prices, so it is impossible to know.

Thanks guys. I had assumed it would be a user. Just wanted to make sure. It rode shotgun to an 0550 for utility duty today on a road trip to Orlando. Slim and out of the way next to my wallet.
