Came across a nice whetstone recently. The stone and box were caked in oil/dirt and smelled like diesel. I cleaned it all up and indeed it makes a nice sharp edge quick and easy like. I've read that these novaculite stones will last 2 lifetimes without the need of lapping but there are some uneven spots, not bad but not completely level as I'd like. I've been lapping my water stones with wet/dry sandpaper on a glass tile which seems to work pretty well for such soft material. Does anyone have any suggestions or comments I should consider? I'm not going to buy ant fancy or expensive lapping stones. If there is a better(read less expensive) alternative to sandpaper and glass plate, I'm all ears.

This is a really great stone! What a find!

Hi,
see stefanwolf88 use loose grit on a glass plate or a ceramic tile (under $1) to flatten almost every kind of stone, even using sandpaper

A pound of loose grit can theoretically be had for 1-2 dollars, if you buy from your local autobody or sandblasting , or someplace oneline, but you won't find it at homedepot/harborfreight ...

harborfreight does have a "loose grit" sandpaper for $1 for 15 sheets, so, now you have a plan :)
