We (Washington Trails Association) had our semi-annual tool fixing party today. Our trails tools get sharpened, have broken handles replaced and get some fresh red paint on the handles. The bright color helps us to keep track of the tools in the woods.

Here's a pile o'pulaskis along with some grub hoes, pick mattocks, and a few axes.

More grub hoes and some shovels.

Sweet hooks and yet more shovels.

If you enjoy sharpening and repairing axes then maybe your local trails association could use your help. It's fun!

Those are adze-eye grub hoes. They're good for peeling back organic soils to get to the tread-worthy mineral soil underneath. Also handy for prying out a root or rock. The poll can be used for light hammering. The corners are good for chipping at hard soil. Good tough trail tool. We don't sharpen them razor sharp but leave the edge a scant millimeter wide for toughness.

That's what I do with my shovels since we have rock-filled clay soil. Still chops roots but won't ding or roll when I slam it into an occasional rock I didn't expect.

You guys ever try rogue hoes. I have two and love them. Much longer handle then the grub hoes.

They all look so clean. :p

They're supposed to look clean after maintenance. These tools live a very hard life. They're used and abused daily by volunteers. One of the Pulaskis I painted today only had about 2" of axe bit left on it.

We have something similar but I don't think it's made by Rogue. Sort of in between a grub hoe and a McLeod. Those Rogues are pretty well made, eh?

There are 2 of our Rogue-like hoes in this photo. Looks like these are the same length a regular grub hoe.
