I was looking on ebay, Other then the obvious ones you see, how do I know whats an issue knife and a commercial one? I was looking at a camillus it was marked on the butt cap .

Pretty sure the issued and commercial ones are the same. Camillus was one of the makers for the AF. I have two I bought at the store, they're the exact same as the ones I have used in the AF.

Yeh, I wondered about that. I have a friend who only likes to buy gear that this and that unit is issued.

Fallkniven F1. That's what I carry in my flight bag. It is issued to Swedish pilots, but many U.S. pilots choose to carry it.

yeah the fallkniven is a little to pricy for yard work, I have a bark river bravo 1 rampless, but it's not a beater i use it camping and hiking, I just bought a 1967 camillus pilot knife for $35
Ill put a real nice edge on it and i should be all set

Are these knives any good? I bought a camillus because it looks like it has a carbon steel blade I prefer carbon over stainless. And I would always buy a camillus over any other knife. It looks like this was a commercial knife but i dont mind.

I have one of those from Vietnam (the war, not the country). It still has the glow in the dark paint on the buttcap, but it doesn't glow anymore. It's a cool knife, but I don't use it much.

A budy of mine offered to give me his, but I turned him down. I think I would just buy the Onterio ASEK if I wanted one of those type.

Cool looking style though, I'm a FAA mechanic not a pilot.

BlackJack has a real nice version of the classic Jet Pilot survival knife available.

A bit pricey for yard work.

I heard alot of aircrew guys have that knife. I asked my dad he was a pilot in vietnam he flew C141s and he said he had one and said it was ok . He said he had an orange switchblade with with a blade and a hook but he dosnt know what happened to it, so i found one and im gonna give it to him for his birthday.

Missed the yard work part. The Ontario Air Force knife would suit you fine. Its relatively inexpensive. I bought one used for about $30 a few years ago.

Sounds good. The guy who offered me the knife was in the Air Force, and I think that was his only fixed blade. I just told him that I couldn't take it.

Well, I don't mind spending good money for a knife, I have a bark river bravo 1 which was expensive and it's a great knife. I am a believer that you get what you pay for. Iv always wanted an AF knife ever sense I was a kid and I remember growing up people bought two types of knives Buck and Camillus, Thats why I bought the camillus it has sort of a sentimental value if that makes sense.

yeah, they look useful. I was looking primarily at getting a ESEE 4, but it has some tough competition.

There nice and it looks like they have great reviews, anything with a scandi grind is gonna be great because there gonna get razor sharp.

If you get a new one, plan on re-profiling the edge. I bought 5 of them once and had to re-do every one of them. TUFF knife once you get them sharp. I ground off the top of the guard and made the bottom guard smaller. Makes it a lot more user friendly unless you're planning on making a spear out of it or something.--KV

Well, Id like to send it out to a guy in salt lake city and get a con vexed edge put on it, Ill probably grind down the top cross guard.
