Pilot survival knife holes

Ok, like most of you I've been buying up Camillus knives- I just got a pilot survival, an M3, and a demo knife from brigade quartermaster. This is my first pilot survival and it has 2 lashing holes in the top guard next to one another. From some reason I thought the lashing holes were one each in the top and bottom guards- was I totally wrong?

I don't know exactly what they're for either, my Camillus pilot survival is the same. If it's for lashing to a staff; I wish somewhere they would show directions on how to do it.
