i picked up a pilots knife knife at the fleemarket today, its marked with camillus NY, has the blood grove but has no date stamped on the pommel. this knife is father rough, deep pitts in the blade but has been cleaned up. the pommel and finger guard are still in rough shape. its a good useable knife but otherwise not worth much in the eyes of a collector.

is there any way to date this knife if theres no date stamped on the pommel?

According to my notes on this knife, Camillus didn't begin to date them until 1967, so your knife is from approximately 1962-1967.

But please don't take this as the last word; the usual Moderator, CAMCO, will probably stop in this week.

thanks for the info, i noticed that these things were available as surplus for around 20 bucks a while back although i cant locate any right now. is there any place still carrying them? im not interested in new production, only surplus. im going to use this one as my work knife, opening boxes in the parts department of a bmw dealership will be a nice retirement for this old blade.

sence these pictures ive cleaned the rest of the rust off of the pommel and guard and they shine like the blade, i whish the blade wasent so pitted. it sharpened up really nicely and has a verry nice weight for throwing.

Phil is correct. Your knife with a 5" blade and the stamping on the blade means your knife was made between 1962 and 1967. The first knives with the date stamping were made in 1967 (I think the first ones were stamped "1-67").
