I recently purchased a benchmade 585 mini-barrage at a local gun show this week. I have been looking at the knife for a bit and decided to buy it to cheer my self up a little. ( I broke my nose last week as well) I have to say I am in love with this knife. The action is smooth, it locks up beautifully and I cannot stop playing with it. Everything about the knife is great except the scales on it. The handle is pretty low quality for such a nice knife internally. There is no grip what so ever. I was wondering what you would recommend as a solution. My buddy suggested I remove the scales and spray them with truck bed liner for more grip. I am open to anything,

Knifenut, wrong model. The 585 isn't a Griptillian of any variety, and thus those grips don't fit.

Truck liner should work, as long as you keep the inside and the pathway for the Axis mechanism clear... you could also go balls-to-the-wall and get completely custom grips made, although that will probably at least double the cost of the knife.

The bed liner spray is a horrible idea , no offense intended.

you could get custom G10 scales made for it , check out STR's forumon here.

I've made my own G10 scales for a couple of my knives , it's not hard to do , even without the aid of power tools such as belt sander , etc. Although you would need a drill.

Well I have never worked with the truck bed liner stuff, it was just an off the cuff suggestion. The G10 idea sounds pretty good. Ill have to look into it. You say you did it yourself?

Yeap , made scales for my Kershaw Groove. Took maybe 3-4 hours.

Tools included sandpaper of varying grits , hacksaw, drill and a couple if round files.

and the G10 of course. :D

If you want a grippy material, look at canvas micarta. It has a rough, cloth-like texture, even when wet.

Polished G10 is smooth, and roughing it up with sandpaper just makes it look funny (and doesn't improve grip much). The G10 on most knife handles has machined texture.

Wow, how did I miss that one :foot: I guess reading a post 3 time will be my new standard.

I'm planning to replace the scales of my Kershaw Zing.
How difficult is working with canvas micarta? It would be my first scale replacement project.
