For background on how I messed up my Manix 2, please see this thread:http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=678496

(3) 1/2 inch 2-56 stainless pan head machine screws is all it took to make my Manix2 tight and sturdy again. I like this fix so much I installed one of these long screws in my other Manixes just as a reinforcement.

Is it just the pic. or are those screws pulling the liners together ?

I would probably still make a spacer for that one personally, but at least it's fixed up now :)

Did you have to drill out the liner on the side the clip was on?

Seems like it would be hard to get it to thread thru both liners.

Also, on mine it looks like the blade would hit the screw if it extended through, or be very close to it. Does it come close? Could it possibly touch while swinging the blade shut and put a ding in the blade?

Edit: Just noticed that the one scale is not pulled tight with the liner although I'm sure with the screws that would just be cosmetic.

No, I didn't drill the clip side: I just squeezed it until it was tight on the thong tube and then screwed them through. That's the beauty of this fix---the screws really can't pull the liners together any tighter than I squeezed it because the threads on the clip side control the tension. Once the screw heads bottom against the clip it is done--the off side can't move in either direction (unless they strip the threads, of course).

This one is serrated and the blade misses the screw by a comfortable distance.

It does seem to be pulled slightly away from the liner. I guess I squeezed too hard.:)

Glad it worked! I tried a similar thing when my manix 2 scale came loose. Have since switched over to a 'generic' metal backspacer so I can attach screws from both sides to get a better 'sandwich', and add some rigidity.

Another thing you can try is to put a screw through one of the holes on the non-clip side to clamp down the scale on that side to the liner. You'd have to remove one of the long screws from the clip side though.

I also noticed that with the screw that's nearest the blade edge, if the ball lock is pulled all the way back in the 'unlock' position, the blade can actually fall a bit further into the handle, and hit that screw. Doesn't happen in the 'normal' closed position though.

If you remove one of the screws on the clip side and do what you suggest, you could put a nut on the protruding end (assuming you buy a screw a little longer than 1/2 inch). That way the clip is still being held down at three points.

I don't think it needs all three screws--just one would probably serve the intended purpose.

Easier fix - use a Chicago Screw through the lanyard. Perfect fit, and adds strength. That's what I did.

Hey, what size chicago screw did you use? and where did you get them? Something like that was 'Plan A' for me, but they didn't have anything suitable at the local hardware place.

Why didn't I think of that? I was originally thinking about running a nut through and using a washer/bolt but I thought it would be too ugly. That's when I came up with the idea I did.

It's a shame I didn't think of this first. I've got a whole bag of Chicago screws. Now that Chicago lost the Olympics we need to support them by buying their screws :D

Shoot me an email or PM with your mailing address and I'll send you one. I have a whole bag in my leather working kit I've never opened.

Hey, thanks for that. Don't worry about it 'cos I live down here in Aus, and I'm guessing postage would probably cost more than the Chicago screw:p Managed to find a specialty craft store down the road that most likely carries them (thanks, Google). They're open tomorrow so I'll pop down and see what they have. Failing that, the Australian Knife Collectors assoc apparently carries the 3/8" version.

My manix2 construction is becoming more and more similar to the P'Kal!

It's beginning to sound like this is a common problem. Maybe the next revision will add a screw/spacer near the butt to prevent this???
