Pimped Sage 2 - got me some holes!

I was thinking a few weeks ago how cool it would be to drill some holes in my Sage 2 ala Mayonized if you will. Not only would it look good but I figured it would provide some extra grip over the plain Ti slabs. So.... I got started laying out some patterns with a pencil and later used round cutouts of sticky notes to get a better idea of what it would look like. I did my research on drilling holes in Titanium and bought some Cobalt bits to get the job done. This was all done in my basement with hand tools so please go easy on me as far as the finished product goes. It's not a perfect job but I am pretty happy the way it turned out. I do not recommend this project for the average Joe as drilling Ti is not easy and takes a good amount of patience and finesse especially with a hand drill.

Pictured with my other Sages (two of them are scale swaps between a "1" and "2").

Looks good to me. I dig the mayonized treatment. If you chamfer and polish the edges you can make it look even sweeter.

Those are impressively-straight holes for using a hand drill. I wouldn't think to attempt it without a drill press. Have you weighed it to see how much lighter it is?

By my "hand scale" it's MUCH lighter :p. Seriously, I don't have an accurate small scale so I didn't have the opportunity to check before and after weight but I did think about it.

I may take it back apart to finish it out a little better but in my excitement last night I just wanted to get it back together and try it out. The quick chamfer I did do was with my Dremel and a stone just to make sure it was smooth.

Very nice. The Sage 1 was my first foray into Spydercos and I even modified that a bit :-)

Also surprised how good it turned out without a press. Great job with just a hand drill!

Thank you and welcome to the forums Velopod :)

Very nicely done. You must have a steady hand and good eye to do this by hand.

Epic Thread title btw - "Pimps and Holes" is an attention getter.

Very nice work - that's seriously impressive for hand-drilling.

PS - you've got room for a few more holes on those scales :)

Dude, if you knew how happy I was to get out of this project without a f-up'd knife you wouldn't be asking for more holes  :)

I'm sorry, just a detail question:

Is chamfering on the holes a correct term? I though countersink is more appropriate. Isn't chamfering only applied to outside edges?

Excellent work!

According to Wikipedia, a chamfer is simply a beveled edge, and can be on the outside or inside. Countersink seems more appropriate if the bevel is intended to allow a screw, bolt, rivet, or flared tube to sit flush with the surface.

Yeah I was thinking when I posted that "Man, I don't know how he didn't mess that up since he was drilling by hand, maybe he shouldn't press his luck".
