Does Buck use SS or NS for the rocker and pivot pins ( when theres no bolster of course) ?

It sure looks like SS to me, but I've heard nickle silver is typically used in knives because SS can be hard to work with in this way .

I have decapitated rivets on the 560 model with a Firex spotting drill, and they sure acted like stainless. The pins, which were spin headed on both ends, were probably not hardened but they were tough to drill because when the drill started to bite, it spun the pin. A (hardenable) stainless 400 series pin will be strongly attracted to a magnet. A (non-hardenable) 300 series stainless pin will be weakly attracted to a magnet. A “Nickel Silver” pin will exhibit no Ferro magnetism (attraction to a magnet).

depends on the knife..

on a 110 nickel silver bolster knife, id bet the pins are nickel silver. except for the lock arm rocker pin which is stainless.

on a 500 with stainless bolsters im betting stainless.

Many of the 110’s have a brass pivot rivet. Of the 4 rivets in the 560’s, all were equally a pain in the rear to behead. I have enough examples to run around with a magnet and test the pins. Let me know if I need a new project. The rare earth magnets are good at detecting materials which exhibit weak Ferro magnetism.

if we are talking the lock bar arm rocker pivot or pin......true and theyre obvious by the color...... but modern 110 ones sure look stainless steel to me.

When removing blade pivot pins on 110’s, they are 1/8” diameter yellow brass. The blade pivot bushings (.212”) are usually Phosphor Bronze or Stainless. The rocker pivots on 110’s are 1/8” diameter. The pins on the 560 are 1/8” diameter, but the rocker pivots on a .212” diameter bushing with a 1/8” hole in the middle.
You don’t have to guess about pin material. A good Neodymium magnet will sort it out.

Clarify here I'm talking about the rocker and pivot pins that look like SS.
These pivot pins In question are found on non bolstered knives like the 110LT, 425, 382, 283...ect.

Btw the magnet test didn't tell me anything, I tried on 3 different knives and the magnet is very strongly attracted to the entire area due to the blade and lockbar.

You can file off a few shavings and apply a magnet to them.

Micheal Lowe has done the research on the 110s with help from Joe Houser and others..even built a fantastic site. its 110s, only though.

v2v4 in early 70s they switched the rocker pin to stainless on the 110 from brass. ill bet the 500 is also stainless pins. other models not sure on.....

we can also get J J Hubbard to verify.

I thought it was SS.
