Pin Press Plans, Pin Press Plans ... Don't you just love alliteration at 4:30 in the morning? :D

Okay, sorry, I'm a little slap-happy. :)

Can anyone direct me to plans for building a pin press? Or maybe just some general directions that'll keep me from setting up a press that will kill me?

How heavy a jack should I use?

Do the "anvils" (you can see I don't know what I'm talking about) taper down to roughly pin diameter at the working point? Are they hardened? What are they made from? How are they aligned?

What should I use for a cross bar on top?

Any help will be greatly appreciated, this is one of those deals where I probably need to build my own rather than try to come up with the roughly $400 people sell these things for.

I just remembered a tip. Tim Herman mentioned on another forum, that he got tired of all the pounding etc., trying to set pins. So the next time, he put the knife, w/bolsters on and pins ready to be set, into a machinists vise, and squeezed the heck out of them. He said it worked great.
He cut a test piece up, and said they would never come apart.
Something to think about.

Thanks Mike, I've heard similar stories too. But neither of my vises has enough gumption; I've tried.

Time for a simple assembly job, no? :D
