Pin size vs. handle and blade size

for the few knives I’ve done so far I’ve pretty much gone with bigger pins for bigger knives, up to a max of 1/4”.

Is there a ratio or rule of thumb for determining what size and how many pins to use on a given size of knife?

I’ve seen several larger knives using very small pins, and some smaller knives with larger pins that all look well proportioned, but in most of the designs I’ve worked on the pins look odd and out of place.

Am I over thinking this?

Do what looks good to you, unless you're selling them. Then do what the customer wants or likes.

Yes, its mostly about appearance although pins do add some structural integrity. I have always tried to use pins in a way that compliments the over all appearance of the knife. Anything beyond those considerations (appearance and structural integrity) is over thinking in my shop.
