Pine cone scales

Required items: Pressure pot, air compressor, Alumilite, PearlEx powder(s) of your choice, molds(I use cutting board from WalleeWorld), mixing cups and stir sticks. And maybe something you can cover your work bench with that you can just roll up and throw away(Alumilite doesn't 'wipe up well').

I have not done a video. But it is pretty straight forward....just make sure your 'pine cone'(or whatever other material you are using) doesn't float up in the mold.

Thanks for the response sdb777. Looks like it may be a little more in depth then I first thought.

Look on the YouTube under worthless wood game call blanks, or the like. It'll be the same concept-you'll just be using a different 'wood'....there is a lot of variables that determine the amount of pressure needed to make the air bubbles collapse(that's what the pressure does).

There is a fella that is on a pen turning forum, he makes pine cone pen blanks.....he might already be doing knife scales? Just a thought....

Yes is the answer to sdb's question. A basic pressure pot is at least $125, a 1/2 gallon of alumalite is gonna run you around $60 and the you either need to make your molds or buy them. Google 'Cactus Juice' and find the site for Turn Tex which is where Curtis Seebeck has his stuff, including cactus juice for stabilizing wood, and he also sells pen blanks, and I think knife scales. You can mold just about anything in the Alumalite, it's just a matter of preparing the stuff properly and getting in the molds correctly. It's pretty great once you get going, and a pine cone would be easy in my opinion--I've actually done some 'mini' ones, and they made a great pen blank.
