They are a bush tucker , I reckon there has to be potential in farming them like macadamias , but I think like the macadamia , itll be done overseas before its done here .

Just sharing , these are a found food / bush food / bush tucker , worth while picking up and munching on if you do find them .

I found these on the ground where the Cockies had been tearing into them and knocking them down from the trees

Apart from the taste I can see why they are so liked. If each cone weighs between 5-10kg, is loaded with protein and carbs, and just 3 seeds an hour is enough to keep you going when doing naff all, that's a wonderful resource. Good stuff man.

Taste isnt bad , depending on how you cook em or if you eat them raw . mum loves them raw , but I prefer them boiled , six of one half dozen of the other I guess

Looks like Im going to be strolling around picking up after cockies for a while , as long as they are knocking down cones for me :)

Yeah , its kinda leaking some .
Even tho its green , the busted cones we picked up were equally green, and yet one of the nuts we opened was sprouting allready .
Right now , seems the trees are seeping sap a lot , it might be just from the cockies having fun tearing them up , maybe its the recent shower of rain , maybe both .

I can only guess at the taste but I think it'd be ok. I gather they don't go through that phase every year. Makes me wonder if you have some kind of indigenous Pesto-like substance?

Better shot of what we are dealing with , but cant really get the size of the things across in the picture .. pine cones as big as ya head are just hard to comprehend

Im feeling seriously stuffed to the gills , and I only ate a half dozen or so . Good stuff .

Can you crush one and try to light it with a ferro rod/metal match to see if it will work as a fire starter?

Thanks

Lol no , I tried ... I swear I tried , I peeled dozens of them but each one was too good to waste so I ate it .
Now well , I look preggers .

The nuts dont seem nearly as oily as the smaller ones , maybe these are too green , maybe they will have less moisture / more oil if we roast them . The cones are green , the cockies are knocking them down , they are not dropping because they are actually ripe , they are still very edible , but they could be more mature . Probably there would be more oil content then , I never thought of using it as fire lighting material .

The sap / resin isnt so easy to light either .. its probably way too green or fresh , its still awful sticky and soft . emphasis on the awful ... ever seen how far that stuff can spread when a 6 yr old gets it all over their fingers ?

The stuff we stripped off the nuts tho , when its dried , itll be pretty good to light fires with , its kinda papery / stringy and full of resin , when it dries , itll be kinda flammable .

Woolly maths.

When I wrote “just 3 seeds an hour is enough to keep you going when doing naff all” I was working from the gist that each nut weighs 0.5oz and contains 30 calories.

I think the same weight in peanuts yields about 80 calories. On that, I'd expect them to be a lot less oily.

Read an interesting fact the other day as to why macadamias ( which I love , especially honey roasted) are sold without the shell , it's because it takes 300 pounds of pressure to break the shell! I could try pine nuts , my mother (who has departed this mortal coil) always used to say try every food once.

shoot me an email at neuman.karl@yahoo.com.au and Ill send you some if you want :) We been roasting them cutting them in half with a machete and eating them .. they not bad . I like them hot , not bad with a little butter too .
I tend to stick to bush foods a bit where I can because I have issues with wheat .. any treats are good when the diet is that restricted lol .
