Pine sap removal?

Well! My girlfriend's younger sister got pine sap all in her hair. Needless to say she'd prefer not to cut all her hair off :D Any ideas? I've found baby oil, rubbing alcohol and Goo-gone listed as good choices, but I thought one of you might have run into this.

Rubbing alchohol is what I use ---however , it's MUCH easier if you do it immediately .Once it's dried it's far more difficult.

I did a little search for you and discovered that a product called "Desolve It" works wonders for removing pine sap from dog fur and such. It is available at Wal-Mart in the cleaning section. I guess it works pretty good from the reports I read from users.

When I get my hands coated in the stuff I use lava soap then baby oil,I hate smelling like the stuff but it works.

I've heard mayonnaise, peanut butter and nail polish remover, for chewing gum, but never had to use any of them. Apparently it's the oil in the mayonnaise or peanut butter, and the acetone in the nail polish remover that does it.

old fashioned turpentine is the best, but be careful as its flammable as hell/

that orange go-jo? stuff works well on it too. try straight vegetable oil, that could work, it might not

really ot shower maybe a lil dishsoap it works on arms and hands why not hair?

Wow I'm really surprised with the number of responses suggesting oils. (peanut butter, mayo, butter... hmmm for some reason I want a sandwich..?) Mineral spirits would have been my first guess if it was on a durable surface. But MS and turpentine were no good, because it's a 9-yr-old's hair we're talking about :D Rubbing alcohol did the trick... her mom kinda worked it into the gooey parts for 10 or 15 minutes, then rinsed it clean. Her hair is no worse for wear, perhaps a bit dry from the alcohol but some conditioner will likely take care of that.

Thanks for all your input, gents! Google and this forum saved a kid from an unwanted, drastic haircut  :D

Mayo and Peanut Butter are usually good choices because the oils will work along the hair and facilitate the sap slipping off. Washing the scalp is really important after their use though, as they clog the folicles. Most of the other suggestions work, as we know already, but break down the oils and potentially the hair itself.

Glad you found what works already. I just had to ad my $.02, since I have been sapped in about every way possible. Through that and 6 kids who love the outdoors I've found that pitch happens.;) :D

If it happens again (and I'm sure it will) we'll give the mayo or peanut butter a try. Seems less harmful to the hair itself. Thanks all!

Couple more candidates among the oils:
-- tea tree oil (IIRC is also called camellia oil, not sure if they are the same thing)
-- olive oil
