I swore I'd keep this knife in new original condition...but it kept asking me for an upgrade. This lead to the first handle I've ever made and I'm pleased with the results so far. I think I'll go one more grit on the sandpaper and then need to decide what kind of oil / wax to finish it with. I'm also trying to decide if I should etch the signature, then strip the blade, or just leave it black. Obviously the handle is stripped from the work done on it, so I may be leaning toward stripping the rest. Chris from KFU glued up the wood scales for me and got me started on the process, and for that I'm really grateful!

Here they are in the home-stretch:

dang, thats really neat lookin! first set of scales ever? awesome job buddy. makes me really want to try my hand at a set myself.

Looks good my man. I forgot about you doing a rehandle. Just a suggestion, but one thing I learned from Andy Roy is to finish the handle with scotch brite pads. Since the scales are stabilized you won't need any oil. Take it up to 400 or 600 and finish with a green, grey, and white scotch brite pad that you can get at Lowes. It really smoothes everything out and leaves a nice finish on the tang. I used to leave it like that but have started buffing recently. I can buff it out for you if you want.
I love that spalted elm as well, I haven't been able to find any more lately.

Thanks Chris, I'll do that! They're at 320 now, so I will probably go 400 at least, then scotch brite.

That will do it man! You won't have to worry about the pins bulging since they aren't steel so sand the crap out of it! You will be amazed at what it looks like after the scotch brite pads. They are in the paint section.

I am planing to do he same thing to my BK17. I stripped it ast week and now I'm working on sanding out the tooling marks and pits that were hiding under the coating on the blade.

What a sweet piece of wood and what nice things you have done to it.........Nice.....
