Pinned shields, who does and who doesn't?

Hey all, i'm in need of some help. I am looking to expand my collection with some other brands and would like to know who pins shields?

I am interisted in a Queen Cutlery gunstock (queen or northwoods sfo version). I dont own a Queen or a gunstock. I know that GEC pins their shields, and for some reason its kind of a big deal to me.

Does Queen pin? I tried to search it on google and here and queens website..... Do they just pin their schatt & morgan line? I really like the looks of the Queen gunstock, and would get the GEC #76 outlaw, but am not a fan of the pen blade in front of the main...

Thanks for any help!!

GEC pin their shields :)

Sure do, and I can't figure out why the other manufacturers dont! A shield falling off ruins a knife for me, its not a big deal to some, but, I've seen so many older bokers and whatnot with missing shields that I refuse to buy if the shield isn't pinned. GEC makes it real hard to buy from another company!

as I understand it, the new model queens (presumably since the takeover of the company) do have pinned shields, whereas earlier model ones in the 2000's did not. I can't be sure though.

The only knife I have ever had a shield fall out of was a queen copperhead, fell out within the first month of purchase and carry, it has since been super glued back in and holding fine. It was not pinned, but glued from the factory.

With regards to Queen, the answer is it depends. I have eight Queen-made knives. Four have pinned shields, four have glued ones.

I believe that all of the new Queen D2 knives with Curly Zebra wood have the new style flat shield that is pinned. This change took place prior to the new ownership. As far as I know the Queen knives with D2 steel and the antique honey amber stag bone (like the pictured knife in the original post) still have glued shields.

How many of the four with pinned shields are Queen branded knives, Christian? It almost makes me wonder if it has something to do with the 3-D texture of the round Queen shields. I know that some of their contract knives and SFOs have pinned shields. It is possible that the Northwoods Gunstock has pinned construction, but I've never seen one in person.

This is what I think too. The 'new' Queen shield on the Zebrawood looks different, it's stamped and I think it's stainless. The previous one is whitemetal alloy and is extruded (I think that's the word??) What I can say is that the previous glued shield has a habit of falling out.. .three of mine have done this and the last one lost the shield completely. Queen has been totally incapable of sending me the correct size replacement....which has really annoyed me, so inept!

Yes Christian, the Heritage series does have nicely pinned shields (some great styles too) The Queen QCCC series also sports pinned (wish they ALL did!)

Thanks, Will

Thanks for the reply, Christian. That sheds a little more light on just how random it is on Queen made knives. I figured the S&M Heritage was pinned and I knew the forum knife was one of the others, but I'm a bit surprised that the Winchester isn't considering how highly those are regarded around here.

We should lobby Case to move back to pinned shields. I think its a shame they don't. They make some mighty fine patterns but they come just short of really fine knives.

I'll sign that petition......

Another signature here. I almost purchased a Case knife online last night but I stopped short. Just can't get my thoughts off of the glued shields. It's turned into a dealbreaker feature for me.

Does anyone own one of the Northwoods SFO gunstock knives made by queen? Is the shield pinned? I wonder if I could ask Derrick at KSF, or if it was before his time...

From the Dot era and earlier, Case knives are pinned

Have to disagree just a tad here Mike. Technically one could say Case is still in the dot era. They started phasing out pinned shields around 1977 depending on the pattern and by about 1979 they were done. The dating system with dots began in 1970 and continues. With the exception of 1990-92.

just an update for anyone who cares, It appears that even these older Northwoods SFO knives made by Queen had pinned shields. This thing is exquisite in execution. Suprisingly the most finely finished knife I think I own, if not, it's up there (other than being dull).
