G'day all

I am new to knife making and recently purchased a couple of Damascus blades that have been pre made and I intend fitting my own scales, but there are a few things I haven't quite grasped yet, can someone help?
When I stumbled on this site I found a link to some tutorials and there was one done by Dan Gray and I found this very informative. I noted that Dan used pins to help secure the scales that seemed to have a pattern and they looked really great on the finished handle.
The questions I have are;
1. Are the pins cut from a length of material or just buttons that are fixed into hollow tube.
2. Can any one tell me where I might be able to purchase either, a length of this material or the buttons, which ever is the case.

Thanks

Locky

I believe you mean "Mosaic pins". They can be purchased thru a number of dealers on the net. From what I have read they are not terribly hard to make either , as long as you have a way of forcing the epoxy into the tight tube.
Hope this helps.

I have actually made mosaic pins using nothing more than human powered suction (I realize I'm walking into a lot of jokes, but this information is helpful, so I'll take the hits! :) ). It's do-able, but the final product isn't that wonderful (lots of voids) and it hurts and sucks (ha ha), so unless you're wanting to use lots of lots of this stuff, I would say just buy the ones from the supply places. Also, be careful when you use them. If you use a power grinder on a high speed you'll melt the epoxy and problems happen, so I suggest cutting to your length, and when finishing them just hand file them (although be careful with that, too, because you can generate a lot of heat with a hand file).

Oh, one more thing... I have some of the two sets I made left. I only remember for sure what one pattern looks like (brass 1/4" tube with three small copper tubes inside it and black epoxy).. The other may be an aluminum 1/4" tube with an aluminum square tube inside and a small brass rod on each of the 4 sides of the aluminum square with red epoxy, although I'm not 100%. I made them 4-5 years ago. Anyway, if you want a couple inches of each I would send them to you. Just email me and I'll get your address from you, etc.

LOL :D Funny you should mention that! I have thought to myself why cant I make my own by doing it that way , but I was afraid I would suck up epoxy into my mouth... Now I wont try it hehehehe :p

I bought some vacuum tubing that fit over the 1/4" pin and used that so I couldn't suck it up like a straw. It's slow going. I have a little liposuction machine that I want to try for the suction but I keep forgetting about it when I have the time. Anyway, if you want some of what I have they're yours for the taking, but they're not super fancy.

If you offer a knife making class...I doubt anything would ever get done. :D

Is it getting HOT in here..or wot. :o

I can tell you really LOVE your work....I felt like I needed to smoke a cigarette afterwards... :D

Classic hijack!!

Try this place, and scroll down to the knives forum. Jdee's in there, and can help you find a local knifemakers supply store so the freight won't be so bad.
That's a good place BTW, nice people.

Edited to add; If it looks like a cluster of circles inside a larger circle, or combo's of small squares, and circles in the same overall circle, it's called mosaic tubing. That, or regular pinning material can all be purchased at the same knifemakers supply stores.

BTW; Welcome to BFC! Enjoy!:D
