Pins or no pins in scales?

When selecting a custom knife from Pete's, by choosing no pins in the scales, are they going to be less durable?

Any opinions would be appreciated.

Absolutely not in my view! I have several knives without pins through the scales including a vintage 1989 Buck damascus - sambar stag model. I can guarentee you I wouldn't have ordered my recent custom 110 without pins if I had any reservations at all. For that matter, given how long Buck Knives has been around, I can not imagine them selling a fabrication option that wasn't going to stand the test of time.

Dear SharpCdn,

I don't want to give away any of our secrets, but we use a durable adhesive designed to withstand forces of impact. The worse thing you could do with anything glued is drop it, and our glued inlays hold up to that.

It takes longer to glue the inlays into the liners - each one has to be handled very carefully, versus lining the parts up, drilling and pinning the inlays on. Therefore we added a little extra charge for no rivets. We have built thousands of knives that way before and they appear to hold up to our lifetime warranty.

Thanks Pete, that is what I was hoping to hear, I like the look without the pins, but had to know if there was a negative trade-off. Thanks for your response.

Bald1, thanks for your input too. Nice to hear from a long time end user as well as from the makers.

No pins it will be.
