Pioneer vs. Farmer

I am looking to either get a Victorinox Farmer, or a Pioneer. I think the choice would be easy for most people: get the farmer, it has a saw. Is having a saw that only receives occational use worth the extra girth?

I have both too but prefer the Pioneer as I havent had a need to use the saw yet!

You know the rules here....you have to buy both! :D

Check out the Electrician Plus. Just like a Farmer but has a small sheepfoot/wire stripper instead of the can opener and no lanyard bumpout to dig your hand during extended use. I always have a P-38 on me and the didn't need the c.o. The small sheepfoot is kept shaving sharp and the spearpoint for daily work use.The saw is one of the best put into a pocket knife and makes a great ferro rod striker. My Farmer went to college with my son and he still has it.==KV

I had a farmer, but gave it away. Didn't have a use for the saw whatsoever.

I have a pioneer that I use all the time.

I have both. Some people like the extra width of the saw layer - it's hardly noticeable. You'll never use the saw unless you camp. I vote to get both. You know you want to.

I have both but have yet to use the saw so the Pioneer gets the most carry time. Therefore, you should definitely get both.
It's logic. :D

I have the Farmer and use the saw almost every time I go out in the woods without a larger chopper. (Just a short walk in the woods I don't take a large chopper) They are great for the up-to wrist size trees that fell across the path in the woods.

Some people like the Farmer because its width makes it more comfortable to handle. If you've not into that, though, you might as well get the Cadet, which is even lighter than the Pioneer (46.8g v. 70.1g).

My favorite sak is the pioneer rancher. The can opener is swapped out for a small hawkbill blade which is awesome for opening packages and such. I carry one every day in my back pocket and just bought a pre-need replacement in case they are discontinued. (never done that with any other knife)
The saw on the farmer is great in the woods, and I will grab mine if I'm going camping or hiking. The extra bulk is minimal, but the tool selection on the pioneer rancher is much more useful for my day to day life.

Where can you get the pioneer rancher? I sure would like to have one. Like the man said above, the saw sure works good in the woods if you do not take a chopper with you. The saw works good to cut off walking sticks to. My son broke my nice Whistle Creek walking stick beating a cow on the but.

I really enjoy how thin the Electrician/Pioneer is. An Electrician is in my EDC rotation.

If you camp at all get the Farmer. The saw is a very thin layer tool, not as wide as usual. Plus the Alox knives are already thinner than plastic. A Farmer is pretty close in width to a plastic two layer knife.

The saw on the Victorinox knives are very good, by the way. I was surprised how aggressively it cuts saplings, and how quickly.

I will add that although I don't mind carrying the pioneer rancher in a pocket, the farmer bugs me. If I'm carrying the farmer it's in a makeshift belt sheath. Below is a picture of the pioneer rancher, farmer, and deluxe tinker. For the price you might as well try both.
By the way, I wish you didn't start this thread. Now I have to pick up an electrician and a cadet...
