Just got my pioneer x and I noticed when the blade is closed it is very close to or touching the base of the scissors. Is this anything to worry about or a non issue?

This happens a fair amount on the 91mm alox that I've seen. However, I've never seen it damage the edge of the blade. At worst, a bit of rub. If that's what's going on with yours, I'd say it's normal.

After watching a few videos, and looking at pictures, it looks like almost all Pioneer Xs have the blade offset. I dont think it actually contacts the scissors, it is just very close to it. One more question, is it normal to be able to see daylight between the backsprings and Alox scales in some places? This is my first Alox sak.

Interesting, just looked at my regular alox pioneer and it's the same way. Wonder if it's because the nail nick in on that tighter side, so you'll have some room to push on the nick and ot rub against the awl when you open it?

As for gaps in the springs, all my SAKs have either minimal to no gaps except for my one hand Trekker. Doesn't seem to affect the function of the OHT at all.

All my aloxes that I've had do that. No problem, unless the edge hits something of course!

All the multi-layer 93 mm blades are offset, to leave room for the tool opposite. They're ground that way. Pioneer, farmer, harvester, whatever. It's just that sometimes they touch the tool in the next layer, and sometimes they don't. It's a fraction of a mm difference.

Yes, they're not perfectly fit. Tiny bits of light are normal. I have never even heard of a Victorinox getting loose or coming apart, so the light isn't a sign of fragility.

Can you guys look at your 93mm Alox and see if it is normal for the blade backspring to stick out more when the blade is fully opened than when the blade is closed? My knife does this.

Sure. Sometimes. Let me save you some time:

  • The key ring wiggles vertically a bit.
  • The alox scales will have little chips out of the inner edges.
  • The can opener may not snap with much authority.
  • A pin may not be perfectly peened flat.

I own two alox Soldiers, two Pioneers, and one Farmer. None have what I refer to as issues, but on my Soldiers and Pioneers, the knife blades snap closed very strongly from about the half-way position. This makes me extra cautious when using the knife blades. I don't view it as a flaw, just something to keep in mind.

Jim
