Raymond - Looks good???? Looks damn good ;)
What do you use to brown your stuff with M~?

I like the shape of this one alot! How did you get the sanding grain to run around the handle hole?

Ray it has a two inch piece of 1095 sandwiched between the mild steel at the cutting edge.

B~ This one will be getting a antiqued finish instead of browning. When I do use the browning technique, I used the birchwood/casey plumb brown liquid. I put the head in boiling water and apply. repeat as needed :)

Mark is this gonna have a hole through the haft? Like to smoke with? I'm curious how you'll drill that long hole...

That's very cool, can't wait to see the finished hawk. This was worth the wait. :D

The haft will have a hole to smoke Dave. Harbor freight has a pack of 3 24" long drill bits for like $10. You just have to take it slow and clear the chips out as you drill. It's a hit and miss operation. I've messed up quite few hafts trying to drill them.

Rade Hawkins has maple with the hole already drilled great guy realy good maple if you need his number let me know
Bowie
oops sorry great hawk by the way i want to see it finished really good work

Thanks Mark, I wouldn't have thought of that. How do you keep such a long hole lined up? And what do you chuck the bit in and hold the haft in? I know these are a lot of questions but this kind of stuff is interesting to me.

Dave, It's just a hit or miss when drilling them. Another way is to split the haft and dig a channel through each side.

Thanks for the link Gib. I've got a dozen of the predrilled ones coming from Wayne at Dunlaps right now. Curly Ash , maple and a couple of birdseye on the way.

I'm not 100% sure but I'm pretty sure I heard the original smoking hafts were made in two pieces and the hole was made and then reassembled. I could just be blowing smoke but I think thats how it used to be done.

There are examples done that way Ray. A lot were also done with limbs and burned through with a wire.

Chuck sells a very helpful booklet in case someone is interested :D
