My father has quite an extensive collection of pipes and used to smoke regularly. While I would love to contact him to get information, he is a deadbeat who lives overseas. I haven't seen him in about 5 years.

Is there any pipe smokers willing to teach a newbie the art? I am wanting to purchase a pipe and some tobacco. Can you make any recomendations? Let's pretend I have a reasonable budget. What would a good starting pipe/tobacco? Alas there are no pipe shops around here cept 1 hour away in philly. So I would like to be prepared if I do decide to go there.

Thanks in advance.

Dan, I smoked a a pipe for many years when I was
younger (and immortal:rolleyes: ) then I woke up to the damage smoking was doing to my body got smart and..quit!

Pipe smoking ( and smoking in general) is habit of
another time that now deserves to pass into history
The really sad part here is that way to many young
people fall victum to peer pressure or advertizing
to stay "cool" :( when in truth they wind up
smelling very bad and offending everyone near them.

Can I teach you to smoke a pipe? Yes. Will I help
you shorten your life? Sorry, mate, no I will not
do that.

Smoking is.....:barf: :barf: :barf:

Kind of in the same ballpark meself, but...

As I recall, the cancer rate for pipe smokers who only do a couple of bowlsful a day is not greatly above non-smokers. Pipe smokers don't (or at least shouldnt!) inhale.

One thing I will reccomend is to (if you're intent on this) do is go to a proper tobaccionist, and buy at least a couple of decent pipes.
Briar pipes must be rested after smoking. Most avid pipe smokers have guite a collection, and rotate them on a daily basis.
Avoid the Drug-store sort of pipe like the plague.

Second, get a book, or good advice, and learn the proper mechanics of filling, tamping, lighting, cleaning, and so forth. Most folks who have a bad experience with pipe smoking are using bad technique, and as a result they suffer from "burned tongue", cracked pipes, foul goo building up in the pipe, and so forth.
