So I recently got a head and haft from Track of the Wolf to assemble my own pipe tomahawk. I got the standard English pattern pipe head.

and decided to do a little customizing while I cleaned off the burrs and such from the cast.

I didn't really want something that was incredibly shiny and mirror so I tried doing a transition from a slightly polished look on the bowl to a satin-like finish on the collar, and finally a rough look on the blade itself. I then applied some cold blue in the arrangement I desired and all that I have left is to wrap the indentions I filed in with copper.

As for the haft, I did a simple soaking in mineral oil about 5 times.

Tomorrow I'll be setting the head and finishing the project up (aside from the copper, which will be done at a future point) with some sinew and leather lace.

I just thought I'd share this with others and see if anyone had plans of their own for (pipe) tomahawk assembly.

Thanks, I'm anxious to get it all finished, but it's going to be a project I work on consistently for a while. Eventually I'll be fashioning a mouthpiece out of antler or maybe tooth, as well as making a metal cap with a spring lock to secure the chamber pin.

Been working on patterning with the bluing, I'll be trying a number of different effects, in the mean time here's pictures of the rough final form (shown without further bluing after rubbing in patterns)

Hard to tell from the pictures (currently only have access to a crummy point and shoot, but a friend is visiting with their nicer camera, so I may be able to take better pictures over the course of this weekend if anyone cares to get a clearer look), but the turtle is looking upward at the bowl.

Later on I'll probably try working on some etching. I'm thinking about using the turtle from this...

Looks nice, I had the same kit but didn't do much other then polish the cast marks off a bit. It's a great conversation piece I have found, when I show my friends my pikes of toys they almost always pick up the pipe hawk and say "oooh, where'd you get this?"

Nice looking pipe hawk! gotta do one of these next, thanks for the pics.

I'm glad you guys like it, I was a little embarrassed about assembling a kit with all these fantastics smiths around, posting their beautiful hawks. I managed to get some time to get a nice spool of copper wire to wrap in the parts I filed down, unfortunately my torch seems to have died, leaving me unable to flatten the copper sections into singe bands.

Next thing to do is make a chamber needle, mouthpiece, and eventually a cap.
