Hi every one.

I just wanted to show off my new leather map case, that the very talented Pipeman made for me. I know it’s a little bit of topic but a do carry my Winkler Combat Axe in this bag at times.

I was in a helicopter crash a few years ago, and during the whole thing a lost an old leather map case I had whit me since I was 14. I have been looking for a replacement ever since. I approached several leather workers whit the project but they what I was looking for was something that looked old, whit character.

After spending some time on this forum i discover Robin Simpsons handy work and his incredible ability to make things look like they were more than a hundred years old. He kindly accepted the challenge and went whit me step by step to see what I wanted. Here are some pictures that Robin sent me of the making of the bag.

The buckles are between 80 to 100 years old, giving it a very old look.

The handle was feature that my original bag had, which I had not seen on any other map case. I’m really happy about the way Robin pulled it off.

I’m really happy at how it turned out, it’s better than my old bag and just beautiful. I carry my Winkler Tomahawk in it together whit my personal gear, like my SAS Altoids survival tin, moleskin, a few pens, papers maps etc. this thing is built to last a few lifetimes. I call it my war bag, its coming whit on this years renewed offensive in the ongoing drug war down here.

Robin really out did himself whit this map case, he told me it was one of the hardest bags he has made. Being that it’s all hand cut and stitched I’m just amazed.
Thanks for looking.

Great looking leather work.....Looks like Edwood will put it to good use...
Thanks for all the pic's

Thank you all for your kind comments. Edwin and I have become close friends and it was a pleasure working with him on this project.

A few specs on the bag. I used a 5 oz oiled leather for the outside of the bag and lined it in beautiful 4 oz red/burgundy upholstery leather. Well over 1000 hand stitches in the bag. Because Ed wanted a handle on the bag itself the strap (double layer of the oiled leather) had to detach. He wanted it to look old and I happened to have 3 matching antique harness buckles to use for the strap and the front closer. Truly built like a tank. After sewing it inside out it took me an HOUR to turn it right side out ;-))) Thanks again for the comments folks. IMO this is the best forum on the network.

Very best regards

Robin

Thanks folks, I appreciate your comments very much. I have always carried a bag and for the past few years I have made many more bags for men than women. Here's a pic of my current bag, made 6 years ago from 7 oz oiled cowhide with a real big Grizzly claw for a closer. Funky bags just keep getting better, IMO. ;-)))

Best regards and thanks again

Robin

Pipeman, awesome work!

Are these available for purchase? Do you have a website or are they all custom pieces?

Hey Ed
The claw is off an old rug about 100 years old, it's a bit over 3 inches, was the front centre claw. The S on my bag is a brand and is actually a flying S. I didn't notice the brand on the hide until I got home and since my name is Simpson I had to use it for the flap.

Keep safe Bro

Robin

Looks like a nice timeless design. I just bought a bag for work and for the first time in a long time, switched from nylon / cordura to leather.
Leather looks, handles and ages great. Gotta love it!

Wow, that bag looks great! Pipeman sure knows what he's doing. Great work. It really matches the Winkler hawk.
