Pirela Commander/A Word of Caution

Hey guys,

I think the project is pretty cool. One STRONG word of caution. Do like John did and have the wave removed if you are going to have this done.

I have heard for years that the "ultimate Emerson" would be a waved Rhino. Let me assure you that it is not. Not unless your idea of "ultimate" is getting cut badly every time that you open it.

Have fun with this project and enjoy your new toys but please be careful.

First off, this project rocks. As some of the Usual Suspects know I am a major fan of double edged knives.
Joel, you came up with an awesome idea!
John, you came up with an excellent solution!

I don't want to sound like a critic or a know-it-all so please don't take this post as such. I just want to say that in most (if not all) states carrying a double edged folder like this is basically a felony. The law is ridiculous so I won't even go there. Here's the good news.

Some time ago I spoke with Bob Taylor of REKAT regarding the legality of his pocket Hobbit and I was told that due to the design of the serrations it was determined that the second edge was not actually cutting but rather ripping. As a result this was not technically a double edged folding knife. I don't know enough about state laws to make that kind of call but I just thought that I would mention it since it seems likely that the Pirela Commander will be serrated.
Again I am not trying to rain on this project and I am not an authority on the legal issues regarding such a knife. Just thought I'd mention it.
BTW, I want one!

Yes, I'm going to ditch the wave on this one. Having handled Tamishigiri's and Nyeti's Rhinos, I think there's a reason Ernie didn't wave this model. One nice thing, it'll retain the thumb ramp, which the Rhino doesn't have.

Derek, I kind of figured that, which is why I ditched it. And let me tell ya', I took some heat offline about that.

Can't wait to show it to you.

John

Oh Ark

I thought of that. Joel and I live in the free State of Florida. With a CCW you can basically carry any knife you want (for now).

We can't vote worth a damn, but we do have nice carry laws.

You guys need to come over to the UK with me then.

I have a problem keeping some of my knife collection just to look at inside my own home, let alone carrying anything !

I hear you on that one...... (should I be admitting to a UK LEO that I collect nasty horrible sharp things?)

Hey Derek / John,

Maybe you should have left the wave on with the serrated top - you could sell it as an anti-pick pocket device.
