I'm deleting this original message until this is sorted out. Maybe it's nothing but a misunderstanding.... Thanks, Stacy, for the conversation.

Ya better watch it. You know its legal now to take you out with a Drone.

Personally, BF just ain't what it once was. Could say more, but afraid I might get dinged.

Hang in there Nathan. It will get better.

Robert

PM sent.

I would appreciate it if we all could sit on this one for a day before starting a membership level rant thread, and see what is going on.

A big thank you to all the members who have sat this out while it is being worked on. I am waiting for some feedback from the Super Mods.
I will post an update a bit later today. I think all is going to be fine.

Kudos to you guys.

OK, I have the info I needed.

Nathan is a basic member level. At that level he is not allowed to advertise anything related to knifemaking in his signature line. Links to websites, links to items for sale, or any mention of being a knifemaker are not allowed. This is in reference to his signature line and website link. It isn't about how many knives you make or if you sell them or not. It is about what perks go with what membership levels. If your signature line or website is knifemaking related, then you need the proper level membership. If you don't want that level, that is OK, but the offending info needs to be edited out of those areas.

In Shop Talk, anyone is welcome to post a thread or make a comment on an existing post, regardless of their membership level. talking about knifemaking, calling yourself a knifemaker, or posting photos of knives you made are OK IN SHOP TALK. Other subforums may be more stricter about photos and threads, but here I take the purpose of Shop talk as an open forum for sharing and learning.

That said, any thread or post that gets too close to promoting sales, advertising, or where someone offers to buy or sell anything will get a notice from me or another mod, or locked. If you haven't enabled PM or email, I will have no other place to tell you but in the open forum ( which is a good reason to enable those).

Once more, I will post my posting rules for Shop Talk:
Any Bladeforums member can post in Shop Talk as long as he is sharing knifemaking skills and experiences, asking a knifemaking question, or posting a knife related photo that would be educational to the group.....regardless of membership level.

Honestly, the membership levels need to be more clearly defined with rules listed someplace other than the exchange. I don't go to the exchange as I don't use it. It also makes it sound like the exchange is the area these rules apply. I searched for a long time trying to figure out what rules I violated. Also, this needs to be mentioned in the area where you buy membership levels, as there is no clear definition as to what you are actually buying beyond "knife makers can sell in the exchange" or something to that extent. I've never seen the "rules" for membership levels, even when I bought the memberships in question (and I have had a knife maker membership in the past which I clearly did not need).

I've been a member here 11 years and this has never been an issue until a super mod whom I've never heard of or interacted with sends me a polite, but accusatory pm. I'll admit that I was a bit steamed by it all, and I really didn't appreciate the patronizing response I received back. "Surely you realize.... Surely you realize.... Surely you realize...." The implication that I was trying to skirt the rules to promote my "business" burns me up as well. I pay my hard-earned money to support this site in a small way, even though I get absolutely NO financial return. If I WAS getting business/sales/promotion from BF's, I'd be glad to pony up extra cash. I got the impression that my smaller monetary support wasn't very appreciated. A signature (that you can't use for any purpose other than BS comments??) and FIVE whopping pm's isn't much in the way of thanks. As a clarification, this all was NOT from Stacy, who's communications with me were very reasoned.

In my opinion, the benefit gained for a knife maker level should be as it is described in the area you purchase it. Simply stated, that membership level should allow you a personal maker's forum, more pm's/photo hosting, and access to sell in the exchange. The regulation of the signature I can understand when it comes to posting a website that sells knives. It's a shame I cannot link to a site I built, not for the purpose of selling knives, but for the purpose of documenting my work and storing information/tutorials to help others. The very mention of your real-life status as a knife maker in your on-line signature being prohibited is, frankly, silly (in my redneck opinion, of course). However, as demonstrated by our leaders in DC, I guess there are many stupid rules by which we must live, and many of those rules do not work towards the benefit of the community or the individual.

Esav, I looked through the FAQ, and I never clicked the link to rules to the exchange as I do not operate there. That is why I never saw the rules until I spent a good bit of time searching for them. They need to be linked for when you buy a membership so you will know WHAT you are buying.

I understand Nathan's angst. These rules, while very easy to find, and there from the day you sign up, are sort of like the "Terms of Use" on any software or site you go on....you just click, "I Agree", and don't really read and understand them fully. Many think these rules only apply to selling in The Exchange, but they apply to all sub-forums. Nathan isn't the first or last to have this situation, and all we can do as mods is try and explain it in simple terms.

It would be very difficult to change Bladeforums, as it is so big now, but a three level membership would be the solution:
Visitor ( free) - Simple posting only. No perks, no privileges. Some areas not available.
Member - Allows posting and access to all areas. No selling or signature lines. PM and email allowed. Photo storage to a set amount.
Knifemaker/ Service provider - Full selling and advertising privileges. Larger storage limits. More perks, such as signature lines, website linking, and advertisements.

They're not even listed among the terms of use rules you agree to when signing up. You have to actually click into the exchange and view them there.

The other issue for long-time members like myself who never really venture out of shop talk much is that these rules have not always existed. So while I've been doing the same thing for literally years without a clue as to doing anything wrong, I've never been called out for a violation until just now. Understand if I get a bit defensive.
