So I'm going for my pistol permit and was hoping for suggestions on what to buy I want some thing compact enough to conceled carry but still fun to shoot I want some thing for home and self defence that isn't going to break the bank but will still be reliable

I have a great gun for basically exactly what you describe, the Sig P229 SAS. The SAS stands for Sig Anti-snag I think. It is in .40 S&W. It is designed for carry. Great all around semi-auto. The great thing about the Sigs is you can buy a new barrell and shoot a different round. .357 Sig.

I agree with the Glock 17/19/26 option. I have pistols that i like better than the Glock but if i could only have one gun for the range, home defense, concealed carry and SHTF, it would be the Glock chambered for the 9mm cartridge. The Glock is simple and dependable and the 9mm round is still affordable and readily available. When used for concealed carry or home defense, there are a wide range of ammunition options that make the 9mm a more effective round.

I have a Glock 19 which I do CCW as well as a Ruger SP-101, but most of the time, I find my Ruger LCP in my pocket (in a pocket holster).

Of the three, the LCP is the smallest, most comfortable to carry, but it sucks at the range... I absolutely HATE the long, long, long (wait for it), LONG trigger pull.

Though all of the above do work well for CCW (depending on what clothes you're wearing), I'm still looking for what I consider the "best" for me. I want something as small an light as the LCP, but without the long trigger, and something in at least 9mm. I recently saw a pistol in my NRA magazine that I'll be looking into... It was a "slim" 9mm with two mag configurations (I think it was an XD), one short one holding 13, the other was longer giving 19 rounds total. When I get a chance I'll post the model and manufacture for you.

ON EDIT: The gun I refer to above is the new Taurus 709 slim. I don't have much experience with Taurus, but it's worth a look when I find one to handle. The one I was thinking of above is actually the new XD(M) 3.8 from Springfield A.. I'd like to handle one of those also.

Another vote for a Glock 26 or 19.

Go to a range, try out a ton of different guns in different calibers. Figure out which ones you like and then buy one of those. If you don't have a range where you can rent guns, at least feel them at a store first.

After you buy your pistol, practice, practice, practice! A defencive pistol course is also a good idea.

another option would be a springfield xd sub compact, you can get them in 9mm or 40S&W, under $500.00 also.......I'd go with a glock or XD sub compact, I've got the 9....

Glock 17 ...+5... or any other 9mm model Glock you prefer. Even the full size Glock 17 is not that bulky compared to some other 9mm pistols so be sure to handle several at your nearest gun shop. I hate the mini Glocks personally.

Can't go wrong with the Glock 26 or even the 19. If you can step up in price and may want a smaller size 9mm check out he Kahr pm9.
