Pivot on Recon 1

A while back I stripped the pivot on my 4 max scout( to much loctite) the part of the pivot thats D shaped in the handle which basically turned and stripped the plastic. They should have cut that D shape into the liners as well imo.

Yesterday stripping my new recon 1 fde I picked up the same thing... not stripped but it has so much movement that I think in time it will most likely do the same. I have very little loctite on the pivot screw to avoid it stripping into the g10.

Ok so my question is why not make it so that it has a snug fit? I literally don't see any posts regarding this which is strange. Also it looks like the triad lock is at its max... in other words theres no room for it to seat more.

You mean you’re enlarging the “D”shaped cutout in the G10 by unscrewing the pivot screw? That’s very odd. I’ve disassembled a few dozen Tri-Ad model Recon 1’s and never had one do that. The pivots have all been very easy to unscrew, and definitely haven’t come close to needing enough torque to enlarge the pivot cutout.

Very strange you encountered that much resistance. Only thing I can think of is that you or someone else put higher strength loc-tite on it, or maybe too much? All mine came with a little blue loc-tite.

Come to think of it, all the other Cold Steel pivots I’ve unscrewed were extremely easy to loosen, I’m talking easily 70+ knives.

FWIW, when reassembling, I just use Teflon tape on the pivot screw only and they stay tight. Never had a body or clip screw loosen up after tightening. What color loc-tite was used? Was this one of the new FDE models, or was it bought second hand?

Color loctite I use is blue. Yes the new FDE models bought it new. There is so much play... I don't understand why they don't make it fit tight.

Yeah that’s odd on a new knife. Maybe they applied the loc-tite too liberally, idk. I’ve had a couple Code-4 models with a little play between the pivot and the cutout, and they were just like that from the factory. If you use Teflon tape or even loc-tite, it won’t be an issue.

Never had that issue on a recon 1. In fact, in my experience sometimes they are so tight they have to be pressed or hammered out with a tool.

Concerning the Tri-ad lock bottoming out, I’ve only had that happen when upon reassembly, the stop pin and lock bar pin were accidentally swapped. They are nearly the same size so it’s easy to do. If that’s not the case here, I’d probably return it because it will eventually have vertical play.

Does the lock bar sit evenly with the scales around the “jimping” in the G10, or does it sit lower than them?

since you have the tools already, just stop using lock tite and tighten things every once in awhile. as for the scout or any other knife, try glueing the female stud to the scale.

There are some aftermaket stainless steel parts kits available for the Recon 1.I am presently waiting for mine to arrive. So I can say how they are.

I have had success applying heat to Loctite in order to remove easier. Even just a soldering iron held on the head.
